Dr. Dre<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0revealed\u00a0he\u00a0uses\u00a0AI<\/a>\u00a0while producing music,\u00a0defending\u00a0the technology as a\u00a0\u201cnew tool for creativity\u201d.<\/p>\n

The rapper and producer discussed the divisive topic alongside his longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine in a new interview with the New York Times<\/a>\u00a0published today (August 23).<\/p>\n

Dre compared resistance to AI with the opposition that initially greeted drum machines and synthesisers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a discussion with a few people a few days ago,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were against AI and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like, \u2018OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out\u2019. Or\u00a0synthesisers, right?\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI\u2019m embracing it. I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0wait to see\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0going to happen with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked whether he was using AI while producing, he explained that he was employing it \u201cas a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The producer also dismissed the suggestion that\u00a0the technology\u00a0poses a threat to musicians, saying: \u201cI think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iovine\u00a0was similarly enthusiastic. \u201cI\u2019m very pro-AI in music creation,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t see the downside at all. There will be some crappy music. There\u2019s crappy music now. In the studio, when gifted people have AI,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0going to make better records.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dre and Iovine\u00a0have worked together since the \u201990s and co-founded Beats Electronics, which Apple purchased for $3billion in 2014.<\/p>\n

Iovine has previously predicted that AI would become \u201cmassive\u201d in songwriting<\/a>. Speaking in 2023, he said it could help songwriters experiment when they were struggling for ideas, although he also warned that formulaic approaches could produce popularity but not enduring greatness.<\/p>\n

The use of AI in music continues to be hotly debated. Earlier this month,\u00a0Daft Punk\u2019s Thomas Bangalter described it as \u201ca way to bypass the creative process\u201d<\/a>, arguing that entering prompts into a system runs counter to the deeper and more instinctive process involved in making art.<\/p>\n

Others, including\u00a0Mac DeMarco<\/a>,\u00a0SZA<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Lorde<\/a>, have been very critical of the growing influence of AI, with Jack Antonoff slamming musicians who use it as \u201cgodless whores\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tyga, on the other hand,\u00a0confirmed that he used AI in the making of his album \u2018$tarface\u2019<\/a>, and compared the backlash to the\u00a0initial\u00a0reaction to Auto-Tune.<\/p>\n

A recent study, meanwhile,\u00a0claimed that AI could be detected in approximately 40 per cent of music released during July 2026<\/a>, despite\u00a0nearly a\u00a0third of the artists flagged by the detection software denying having used the technology.<\/p>\n

Spotify recently announced an AI-labelling system<\/a>, while\u00a0Apple Music is set to introduce labels for AI-generated material<\/a>\u00a0later this year. Bandcamp, meanwhile,\u00a0has outright banned music made using AI from its platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for Dre, his recent projects include producing\u00a0Snoop Dogg\u2019s 2024 album \u2018Missionary\u2019<\/a>, a spiritual sequel to his classic 1993 debut \u2018Doggystyle\u2019, while\u00a0he has said he does not listen to much modern hip-hop and dislikes the majority of what he has heard<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dr. Dre\u00a0has\u00a0revealed\u00a0he\u00a0uses\u00a0AI\u00a0while producing music,\u00a0defending\u00a0the technology as a\u00a0\u201cnew tool for creativity\u201d.
