Mr. Turner<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tO\u2019Flynn replied, \u201cYeah, I\u2019m in, great.\u201d That was that. \u201cHe said it was the quickest conversation he\u2019s had with an actor, which surprised me,\u201d she says now. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what it\u2019s going to be, but it\u2019s just fun to roll the dice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tIt\u2019s a good thing she did. O\u2019Flynn gives a poignant, deeply lived-in, subtly shattering performance in Tender Loving Care as Amy, a dogged social worker struggling to rebuild her life after ending things with her boyfriend. She moves in with her best friend (played by breakout Alice Bailey Johnson) while navigating simmering tensions with her parents (Paul Jesson and Marion Bailey), who imagined a different life for their daughter. These strands emotionally converge as Amy\u2019s father\u2019s health begins declining, and the family must come together for him and for one another.<\/p>\n
\n\tIt\u2019s a completely different part from Widow\u2019s Bay\u2019s Patricia. The combination of the two would make for a striking dual showcase for any actor \u2014 let alone one whose big break happened just a few months ago, following decades of putting in the work. \u201cI know how rare this is. I worked really hard to get here, to get the opportunity,\u201d O\u2019Flynn says. \u201cBut it does also feel like I rubbed a lamp and said to a genie, \u2018Can you get me two great roles one after another that are going to come out at the same time? Can you just serve them up to me?\u2019 It doesn\u2019t happen like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMike Leigh\u2019s legendary method precedes itself: He casts actors without a script and allows them to build the characters, brick by brick, and then the story. When O\u2019Flynn was 21 years old, Leigh invited her into the process for Happy-Go-Lucky. She was instructed to think of someone in her life, describe them, walk around as them, become them \u2014 then pull from other real-life situations, then let the magic of fiction take over. O\u2019Flynn was still a student at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and had no idea how atypical this approach was for film acting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI was very naive and I just kind of went with it and enjoyed it, but couldn\u2019t properly place how unusual a process it was,\u201d she says between bites of her veggie omelet. For one day\u2019s work, before cameras started rolling on Happy-Go-Lucky, O\u2019Flynn arrived at the flat of Hawkins\u2019 Poppy \u2014 in character. The cast improvised for 11 hours: They hung out in the apartment in character, they drove to Southend in character, they attended a barbeque in character. Leigh was always watching in a corner. The script would form out of the immersive exercise. At 11:00 p.m., he said, \u201cCome out of character.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI remember going to the hotel that night, looking in the mirror and going, \u2018Who am I?\u2019\u201d O\u2019Flynn says. \u201cThen we shot the scene, which was three, maybe five minutes long. After 11 hours of improvisation!\u201d O\u2019Flynn had returned to the process over the years, in between landing juicier TV parts in series like Landscapers and My Lady Jane, and the nerves always buzzed her anew. \u201cI\u2019ve usually got the safety net of a script, so having to constantly think small and go in step by step \u2014 like, am I actually going to be exposed to having no imagination? That\u2019s my fear going in,\u201d she says. \u201cA lot is demanded of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tTender Loving Care presented an even more intensive challenge. When O\u2019Flynn arrived to begin character development, she was introduced to the story\u2019s parents, played by two actors with a lifetime\u2019s worth of Leigh films under their belt. \u201cThey had this shorthand, this lack of fear, that I was moved to watch,\u201d O\u2019Flynn says. \u201cUp for equality. Balls to the wall. Let\u2019s go. It was inspiring.\u201d As they got deeper into it, the project unveiled itself, layer upon layer. O\u2019Flynn just said aloud one day, \u201cI think maybe social work,\u201d and Amy\u2019s job was decided \u2014 not to mention so much more.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThere is that hook of being on the front lines, trying to do something in a system that\u2019s not working \u2014 and there\u2019s a reason she makes that choice to do an all-consuming career,\u201d O\u2019Flynn says. \u201cIt means she doesn\u2019t have to think about what she wants, about her desires or her life. She doesn\u2019t look after herself. She doesn\u2019t eat properly. And you can\u2019t ever ask her a question and her answer straight or give you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tO\u2019Flynn communicates such detailed, intricate knowledge of Amy\u2019s psychology and background it\u2019d sound obsessive in any other context; for a Mike Leigh movie, it\u2019s a prerequisite. Especially when you\u2019re one of the movie\u2019s main actors \u2014 a new experience for the star. She got a TikTok with a social-work algorithm to learn how those in the field speak and move. She interviewed all kinds of professionals for research. A specialist was on set to ensure the dialogue that came out of any improv was accurate.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tO\u2019Flynn also sat in on casting sessions for the children that Amy works with. \u201cI felt really trusted to be there with Mike,\u201d she says before bursting into a laugh. \u201cAnd I was just like, \u2018Oh, you did the same to me when I auditioned.\u2019 He\u2019s got his spiel!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs O\u2019Flynn saw it, Leigh decided along the way of making Tender Loving Care that it would be his last film. \u201cIt was a process for him \u2014 his method is just particularly tiring as a director because he\u2019s creating everything from scratch and everything goes late in the day,\u201d she says. \u201cBut he\u2019s razor-sharp. There\u2019s a childlike excitement that he has in making films. He loves it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tAt this, O\u2019Flynn breaks down in tears mid-interview. We sit in silence for a few moments. \u201cIt\u2019s a vocation,\u201d she says finally. \u201cYou see it so clearly. It\u2019s something he has to do.\u201d Still crying, she then starts laughing to herself: \u201cBeing like this now, I can feel Mike being like, \u2018No, Kate, no.\u2019 I can feel him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tIf Leigh\u2019s screen career, which includes seven Oscar nominations without a win, indeed concludes with Tender Loving Care, it\u2019ll make for a fitting closing note. The movie is wondrously attuned to the mundane, to the absurd humor and gentle devastation that lives in the everyday \u2014 and in so much of his work. It\u2019s a kind of call to action through filmmaking, an unflinching look at the way overloaded systems are failing countless people and an expression of the vitality of showing up for those in need. O\u2019Flynn sees it in tandem with Leigh\u2019s last work, Hard Truths.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cHard Truths is kind of painful, and with this, he wanted a slightly lighter, more loving thing,\u201d O\u2019Flynn says. \u201cWhen I watched Hard Truths, I was like, \u2018This guy\u2019s still got it.\u2019 There\u2019s a fearlessness in it. It\u2019s amazing that he still fucking wants to do it. So many people, as they get older, get scared and their worlds become smaller. They don\u2019t live. What I love about Mike is there is that determination to live and be plugged in and be interested.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tTender Loving Care\u2019s final shot alone holds so much of Leigh\u2019s 55 years of making movies \u2014 and the director came up with it well in advance, telling O\u2019Flynn about it on set. As the significance of the whole project to Leigh became clear, O\u2019Flynn found that grief infusing the work. \u201cI don\u2019t think Mike would agree with this, but there was something meta about it,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019ve got a filmmaker who\u2019s making his last film, and then the film is about that stage of life and things ending. God, I think I\u2019m getting myself in a rabbit hole. But it\u2019s about all the ways we try and care, and the complexities that come with that. It was all in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tShe calls this moment \u2014 what\u2019s about to come for Leigh \u2014 his \u201cvictory lap.\u201d O\u2019Flynn, meanwhile, realizes she\u2019s at the beginning of something thrillingly, terrifyingly new. \u201cI\u2019m being asked, \u2018What do you want to do, if you could play a part?\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI have never had that conversation at all before. It\u2019s having to properly think about, if I could do anything, what would it be \u2014 and actually, why am I doing this? But I do feel quite confident in the answer because I was tested with that when I was not making any money and no one was interested.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tNow, the people are very interested. \u201cIt\u2019s also like, \u2018Now you\u2019ve got the opportunity to just get on with it instead of tying yourself in knots,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019ve just got to hang on to the rocket ship.\u201d<\/p>\n
