{"id":74878,"date":"2025-08-18T06:48:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T06:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/74878\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T06:48:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T06:48:06","slug":"how-george-russell-has-avoided-psychological-struggle-in-wait-for-f1-title-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/74878\/","title":{"rendered":"How George Russell has avoided &#8216;psychological struggle&#8217; in wait for F1 title challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportweek.com\/tag\/russell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Russell<\/a> has detailed how he has learned to avoid enduring a \u201cpsychological struggle\u201d as he continues to await a title-contending car with Mercedes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportweek.com\/series\/single-seater\/formula-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Formula 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Brit has, under many circumstances, enjoyed another positive year in his F1 career, lying fourth in the Drivers\u2019 Championship, just 15 points behind Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the difficulty, shared with many drivers, of keeping up with the rampant McLaren squad this year, Russell has once again shown calm, fast and consistent driving.<\/p>\n<p>The Mercedes driver has also had to contend with persistent rumours over the summer about his future with Mercedes due to the alleged talks it held with Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>But despite all of that, Russell has scored six podiums, one being a superb and commanding victory in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the Untapped podcast, Russell revealed how he has had to mentally find positives in the results he has been realistically able to achieve, even if they are not victories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you learn that you have to take those small victories,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got to adjust your goals to what is a realistic goal for this given weekend, or what is the realistic goal for this given season.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/George-Russell-F1-2025-Mercedes-1024x576.webp.webp\" alt=\"George Russell took his sixth podium of 2025 in Hungary\" class=\"wp-image-219930\"  \/>George Russell took his sixth podium of 2025 in Hungary<\/p>\n<p>Russell insists 2025 F1 struggles should not deter Mercedes<\/p>\n<p>Russell called for patience within the ranks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedesamgf1.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brackley-based squad<\/a>, admitting that whilst it is currently failing in its bid to win the championship, it is not yet the end of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo win the championship this year is not a realistic goal,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, we\u2019re working towards that, but if we don\u2019t achieve that goal, we shouldn\u2019t be kicking ourselves, because we\u2019re just not in that position right now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s when we go into every single race weekend thinking: \u2018Right, we think we\u2019ve got an opportunity to fight for the podium here.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I finish in fourth place, I won\u2019t be happy. If I finish in second, I will be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr on the flip side, if we believe we can win this weekend, but we only come home in third, that might be a better result than all the other races, but you\u2019ve underachieved compared to the potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to teach yourself to take those small victories, otherwise you\u2019re going to get in a sort of a negative spiral of psychological struggle, and that\u2019s only going to impact your performance later down the line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, you\u2019re not doing this just so you\u2019re staying happy.
