Think you’ve found a clever loophole to get your general rubbish picked up on recycling day? A waste collector<\/a> with a large social media<\/a> following says you almost certainly haven’t, and trying it could leave you stuck with an overflowing bin for weeks, as well as a fine in some cases.<\/p>\n Missing a bin collection<\/a> is frustrating enough at the best of times, but when it’s your own actions that cause it, the situation is entirely avoidable. With collections typically running on a weekly or fortnightly schedule, an uncollected bin can quickly become a problem, especially in warmer months.<\/p>\n Ashley, who posts on TikTok under the name No 1 Binman<\/a>, has spoken out after noticing a pattern in the comments on his videos. Time and again, people boast that they routinely bury bags of general waste underneath layers of recycling, confident that bin crews<\/a> will never notice. Ashley says that couldn’t be further from the truth.<\/p>\n He said: “The number of people in my comment section who go, ‘I just hide everything underneath all the other recycling and they never find it’. We find it. We 100 per cent find it – we know the houses that do it all the time.<\/p>\n “Just today I went to a bin… You can have a feel for it. You push the bin, and you’re like, ‘That’s too dense to just be plastic and glass’. It had all plastic on top, I was like ‘lovely, maybe I’m wrong for once’. Took it to the back of the lorry, put it up, and the top layer came off. Brought it back down – full of bags. Bags of rubbish.<\/p>\n Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n “It got rejected. Stuck a label on it saying this bin is contaminated and we’re not collecting it. And now it’s up to you to sort it. And we’re going to know next time we go to that bin that it’s been contaminated.<\/p>\n “So don’t get caught out. You think you’re clever, and then you’re left with the bin.”<\/p>\n According to Ashley, it isn’t just a visual check that gives the game away. His team has developed a feel for when a bin’s contents are denser than they should be for a standard recycling load – a telltale sign that something heavier is lurking beneath the surface.<\/p>\n Properties that are repeatedly found to be doing this are actively monitored, with crews carrying out manual checks before the bin is tipped into the lorry. The consequences are straightforward: a contamination label is attached to the bin, the collection is refused, and the resident is left to sort out the contents themselves before the next scheduled visit.<\/p>\n What’s more, you could land yourself a fixed penalty notice of between \u00a360 and \u00a380, especially if the wrong disposal creates a public nuisance or a health hazard, so it’s really not worth it. Plenty of viewers backed Ashley’s stance in the comments, with many expressing frustration that some households continue to flout the rules.<\/p>\n One person wrote: “Just follow the rules, guys. It’s for your own good and your future generations.” Another said simply: “I don’t understand why people don’t just sort it.”<\/p>\n One viewer shared a more positive encounter with their local collection team: “I put plastic bath toys in my recycling bin, no clue they weren’t included in recycling, so my bin was left full. A lovely fella from the council knocked on later that day and explained, ‘Leave it out minus the toys, and we’ll come back and empty it’. No issues.”<\/p>\n While some commenters claimed they had never been caught putting the wrong items in their bins, the risk is simply not worth taking.
