Even people who are strongly committed to each other may find themselves in bitter disagreement. Joe likes to get things done in a hurry, but Terry, his partner, believes that slow and steady wins the race. As much as they’ve discussed this difference in their approach to life, they’ve now reached an impasse. Neither one seems willing to change, despite numerous efforts to talk this out. Yet, they love each other and want what they have to last. With their relationship on the line, what—if anything—could help them come to a new understanding?

Relational Hope as the Key to Overcoming Challenges

As proposed in new research by the University of Rochester’s Claire Shimshock and colleagues (2026), it’s relational hope that can serve this key function. Defined as the “striving toward desired outcomes and goals within their relationship,” relational hope is a specialized version of hope in general: the “motivation and strategies for attaining one’s goals” (p. 991).

People in long-term committed relationships, like Joe and Terry, may reach points where all hope does seem lost in resolving their difficulties. The bickering that can come from differences in personal style may come and go, but when it does come, it’s hard for either partner to see a way out. Maybe, suggest the U. of Rochester researchers, they need a good, strong dose of hope.

It’s important to distinguish, the authors argue, between hope and general optimism or positivity. Feeling that all will come out well isn’t the same as being able to engage the mental resources needed to reach your goals. As Joe and Terry have learned, they can love each other all they want and feel that it’s important to stay together, but this isn’t enough to ensure that they can overcome their differences.

The Three Facets of Relational Hope

Because there is no current measure of relational hope, the authors sought to develop a questionnaire scale that would tap into what they proposed to be its 3 key factors. Below are the factors and sample items from their new measure:

Factor 1: Relational agency. This is a combination of motivation and capacity to reach the goals in the relationship. Sample items are:

I am committed to continually growing and improving my relationship.
I am willing to put in the work for my partner and my relationship.
I will do whatever I can to help my relationship grow.

Factor 2: Relational pathways. These are the resources and strategies for pursuing goals in the relationship. Sample items are:

I can shift my perspective when faced with challenges in my relationship.
I often use new approaches to improve my relationship.
I am creative in finding new solutions to relationship problems.

Factor 3: Relational aspirations. These are positive feelings in anticipation of reaching relational goals. Sample items are:

The trajectory of my relationship seems promising.
I envision a positive road ahead for me and my partner.
I feel secure in the future of my relationship.

The Shimshock et al. research team conducted two studies to develop this scale and test their model. Both studies involved couples drawn from the community with an average age of 36 years old and in relationships with an average duration of 10 years. In the first study, couples visited the lab, where they discussed their goals with each other for two six-minute periods, alternating roles as speaker and listener. In the second study, couples were followed over a period of three months; it was in this study that the Relational Hope scale was developed. Couples also articulated their specific relational goals.

The overall prediction was that couples high in relational hope would be higher in the outcomes of overall satisfaction, ability to resolve conflict, and feelings of commitment. Because both partners were included in these prediction models, it was possible to use what’s called the actor-partner interdependence model, also known as APIM, to collect and analyze the data. By tapping into both actor and partner, the APIM allows for the estimation of the effects of each individual alone and each individual’s partner in predicting relationship outcomes.

Relationships Essential Reads

The findings from Study 1 clearly supported the value of relational hope as promoting intrapersonal (within-person) benefits after the goal discussion. Study 2 showed, further, that relational hope promoted the building of stronger relationships over time. As the authors concluded, relational hope may be a “positive resource” to help couples develop “enduring bonds” over time.

You may be wondering what types of relational goals couples said they had in that second study. Here are some examples of the most frequently mentioned:

Having more quality time (20%): developing shared hobbies or interests and planning a vacation together.
Family and life planning (16%): planning a move or relocating together, advancing the relationship (marriage proposal).
Communication and conflict management (13%): being more patient (Joe and Terry’s situation), controlling one’s temper, setting up weekly check-ins to communicate.
Practical issues and day-to-day functioning (13%): coordinating finances and budgeting, division of labor around the house.

As you can see from these examples, the couples in this study discussed both practical and emotional goals, both of which are essential components of long-term relationships. Achieving these goals through relational hope, as the authors concluded, allows each partner and the couple to keep their eyes on the prize.

Using Relational Hope to Build Your Romantic Relationship

In many ways, the U. of Rochester study may seem to reflect a very obvious fact: that couples who think they can succeed do so. However, the devil in the details here is that thinking isn’t enough. Nor, did the study authors conclude, is overall optimism.

Rather than wishing you could get to where you want to with your partner, you need to engage deeper motivations, plan a set of strategies, and have confidence that this can work. Joe and Terry, who are in that relational goal category of differing on the patience factor, could benefit from isolating this key problem area and then planning, together, their way around it. That idea of the weekly discussion could be one practical route to follow, all the while continuing to express their desire to reach a compromise in their personal styles.

To sum up, knowing about the importance of relational hope can provide you with the emotional and practical steps you need to help the bonds that you cherish on a path toward a fulfilling future.

In any romantic relationship, there will be challenges that threaten to end it.
