In his 1984 book The Haight-Ashbury: A History, writer Charles Perry went as far as to say that “The Beatles were the soundtrack of the Haight-Ashbury, Berkeley, and the rest of the [Northern California] circuit. You could party all night and hear nothing but Rubber Soul“.

That album in particular, released just before Christmas in 1965, seemed to either ignite the psychedelic rock movement in San Francisco or validate it, depending on who you talked to.

Grace Slick, who was still a member of The Great Society at the time and was a year away from becoming the frontwoman of the Jefferson Airplane, was 26 years old, the same as the lads, and hadn’t been all that impressed with any of The Beatles’ records of the previous two years, finding their tunes and subject matter juvenile and forgettable.

“I thought they were silly,” she admitted years later, “Until they came out with Rubber Soul“.

As The Beatles laid out a possible blueprint for mainstream success with their more experimental, drug-influenced songwriting, the admiration that the San Fran groups developed for them was soon reciprocated, as John, Paul, George and Ringo became equally fascinated with the sounds emerging out of the Bay. Over the next year or so, that would include the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Charlatans, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Slick’s new outfit, Jefferson Airplane.

In August 1966, as The Beatles were on what would prove to be their final tour, supporting their new record Revolver, they played to a crowd of 25,000 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, their last ever paid gig. No official torches were passed after the show, but the band seemed to sense that the times were a-changin’ again, for at the same time that playing live no longer seemed viable to them, they felt a mix of enthusiasm and envy for the rising San Francisco bands, who had total freedom to pursue their creative ideas without the restrictions of an established worldwide pop stardom to worry about.

Paul McCartney was particularly interested in the Haight-Ashbury scene, right down to how the bands were branding themselves. After returning to the UK, he kept thinking about what he’d seen there, and some of the ideas started filtering down into the planning of the next Beatles album in the early months of 1967.

Credit: Far Out / Apple Corps / Alamy

“Sgt Pepper is Paul, after a trip to America, and the whole West Coast, long-named group thing was coming in,” John Lennon later recalled to the New York Times, “You know, when people were no longer The Beatles or The Crickets, they were suddenly Fred and His Incredible Shrinking Grateful Airplanes, right? So I think he got influenced by that and came up with this idea for The Beatles.”

Thankfully, Paul didn’t suggest a straight-up parody of the Haight-Ashbury groups, which is what a name like “Fred and His Incredible Shrinking Grateful Airplanes” would have been. As Lennon clarified, McCartney “was trying to put some distance between The Beatles and the public, and so there was this identity of Sgt Pepper. Intellectually, that’s the same thing he did by writing ‘He loves you’ instead of ‘I love you’. That’s just his way of working.”

Paul was excited by the idea that The Beatles, now five years into their recording career, could create an alter ego for themselves as a way to push the envelope further without risking the total implosion of the established fandom. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was his solution, partially inspired by the long-named Bay Area groups and partially by a far more English concept of the old Edwardian brass band.

When the ‘concept album’ was finally released in May 1967, it became an even bigger phenomenon in San Francisco than Rubber Soul, serving as a huge sonic centrepiece of the Summer of Love, despite the fact that the Fabs never performed any of its songs in front of an audience.

McCartney’s high-minded concept was widely appreciated by fans and critics alike, but the quality of the songs did far more of the heavy lifting than the rather thin alter ego narrative. No one was confusing the Lonely Hearts Club Band with any of the Haight-Ashbury acts that inspired them, and even Paul’s own bandmates didn’t put much of any thought into inhabiting a different character on the album.

“Sgt Pepper is called the first concept album,” Lennon said in 1980, “but it doesn’t go anywhere. All my contributions to the album have absolutely nothing to do with the idea of Sgt Pepper and his band, but it works ’cause we said it worked, and that’s how the album appeared. But it was not as put together as it sounds, except for Sgt Pepper introducing Billy Shears and the so-called reprise. Every other song could have been on any other album.”

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE The Far Out Beatles Newsletter

All the latest stories about The Beatles from the independent voice of culture.
Straight to your inbox.

Credit: Far Out / Alamy Wed 26 August 2026 2:00, UK The Beatles are not typically thought of…

[28
19405,177457,96,76394,116256,128,160393,4237,190792,42054,212978,10447,56,54,55
post-750086","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1960s","tag-british-rock","tag-entertainment","tag-grace-slick","tag-jefferson-airplane","tag-music","tag-psych-rock","tag-san-francisco","tag-sgt-pepper","tag-sgt-peppers-lonely-hearts-club-band","tag-summer-of-love","tag-the-beatles","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
