{"id":750125,"date":"2026-08-26T08:32:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T08:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/750125\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T08:32:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T08:32:25","slug":"high-dose-vitamin-d-may-protect-against-cognitive-decline-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/750125\/","title":{"rendered":"High-Dose Vitamin D May Protect Against Cognitive Decline, Study Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that vitamin D is important for more than just strong, healthy bones.<\/p>\n<p>A new study out of Emory University found that taking vitamin D supplements may benefit brain health, particularly in older adults with mild cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p>The research was published in the journal \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1389945726001991?via%3Dihub\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Sleep Medicine\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a8c694fe4b004726c09c26f\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1389945726001991?via%3Dihub\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sleep Medicine<\/a>.\u201d The small study looked at 54 adults with early signs of dementia \u2014 specifically sleep issues and mild cognitive impairment \u2014 and found that those who took daily high doses of vitamin D (at least 5,000 IU) had better cognitive function when compared to adults who didn\u2019t take the supplement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn older adults experiencing both sleep disturbance and mild cognitive impairment, this may represent a critical window for intervention, when cognitive changes are emerging, but opportunities to support brain health may remain,\u201d study author Victoria Pak said in a<a href=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2026\/08\/high-dose-vitamin-d-may-improve-cognition-among-those-risk-dementia-emory-study\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\" press release\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a8c694fe4b004726c09c26f\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2026\/08\/high-dose-vitamin-d-may-improve-cognition-among-those-risk-dementia-emory-study\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers had participants take the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, which is a dementia risk screening tool that measures thinking and memory. Participants who took 5,000 IU of vitamin D scored roughly 13% higher on this assessment than those who did not take vitamin D at all.<\/p>\n<p>There are limitations to this research, namely that the study is very small, so it\u2019s hard to say if these results would hold up in a larger population. But the data does add to existing research that suggests vitamin D supplementation is important for brain health. Previous studies have found that low vitamin D levels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2667268526000227\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"may put folks at higher risk \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a8c694fe4b004726c09c26f\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2667268526000227\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">may put folks at higher risk <\/a>of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aan.com\/PressRoom\/Home\/PressRelease\/1300\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"dementia\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a8c694fe4b004726c09c26f\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.aan.com\/PressRoom\/Home\/PressRelease\/1300\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dementia<\/a>. This is even true for adults in their 30s and 40s; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/vitamin-d-levels-dementia-risk_l_69d6bf15e4b00247ba993476\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"other evidence suggests \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a8c694fe4b004726c09c26f\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"69d6bf15e4b00247ba993476\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other evidence suggests <\/a>that high vitamin D throughout midlife resulted in fewer dementia risk factors as people aged.<\/p>\n<p>The research also only examined participants with two main symptoms of dementia \u2015 sleep loss and mild cognitive impairment (which is defined as a slight decline in thinking and memory skills that appear to be worse than normal aging).
