A young man\u2019s life has been saved after he was treated for an extremely rare and aggressive form of testicular cancer at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), the sole specialist centre of its kind in the East Midlands.<\/p>\n

Ryan Tyrrell from Northampton, was just 19 when he was rushed to hospital with chest pain. What initially appeared to be a lung problem quickly escalated into a life-changing diagnosis.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n

Doctors discovered a mass in his lung, but further tests revealed the underlying cause was far more serious. Ryan was diagnosed with choriocarcinoma, a highly aggressive and extremely rare germ cell cancer that had originated from a small, previously undetected tumour in his testicle. By the time it was identified, the cancer had already spread to his lungs and brain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were no warning signs at all. Nothing,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was working full-time, going to the gym five days a week. I thought I was completely healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n

His condition deteriorated rapidly. \u201cIt all happened really quickly. I woke up one morning and couldn\u2019t breathe. Within a day, I was being told I might have cancer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Although choriocarcinoma is one of the most aggressive forms of testicular cancer, most commonly affecting men aged 16 to 40, it is also highly curable with rapid access to the right specialist treatment.<\/p>\n

Within 24 to 48 hours of tests showing his cancer markers were rising dramatically, Ryan was contacted by NUH\u2019s specialist germ cell cancer nurse, Nicola Wilshaw and told to travel urgently to Nottingham to begin treatment.<\/p>\n

NUH is the only centre in the East Midlands able to provide the highly intensive chemotherapy required for complex and high-risk testicular cancers, making it a vital regional hub for patients with rare and advanced disease.<\/p>\n

The Trust leads a super-regional multidisciplinary team covering seven NHS Trusts across Nottingham, Leicester, Lincoln, Derby, Northampton, Kettering, and Coventry and Warwickshire, reviewing around 500 cases each year to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care. Patients with aggressive or complex cancers like Ryan\u2019s are urgently transferred to Nottingham for specialist treatment.<\/p>\n

Lucy Gossage, Consultant Oncologist specialising in testicular cancer at NUH, said:
\u201cIt is so important that patients with germ cell cancers are treated by specialists who have experience in these rare conditions. By centralising care, we can ensure patients receive the expertise and treatment they need at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan\u2019s case required immediate intervention. Nicola, Clinical Nurse Specialist at NUH, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cRyan had one of the most aggressive forms of testicular cancer, which required a plan of action within 24 to 48 hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cNottingham is the only centre in the region able to provide this level of highly intensive chemotherapy, which is why patients like Ryan must be transferred here urgently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan underwent 18 to 20 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, including several weeks as an inpatient, followed by two operations to remove the remaining tumour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just told myself \u2013 it\u2019s a year out of my life to live the rest of it,\u201d said Ryan<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to stay positive. Some days were really hard, but getting through each one was all that mattered.\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

During his treatment, Ryan was cared for on the Teenage Cancer Trust-supported unit at Nottingham City Hospital, which provides dedicated support for young people facing cancer.<\/p>\n

Thanks to rapid diagnosis and access to specialist care, Ryan has now completed treatment and currently shows no evidence of cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo see Ryan now after everything he\u2019s been through, is incredible,\u201d said Nicola.\u201c<\/p>\n

His tumour markers were extremely high when he came to us, to see them return to normal shows how effective the treatment has been.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan is now sharing his story to raise awareness of testicular cancer and encourage others, especially young men to check themselves regularly. With it happening at such a young age, Ryan has been an advocate to his friends and those around him about the importance of knowing your body.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour whole world just comes crashing down. The hardest part was the uncertainty. I didn\u2019t know what was going to happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes less than a minute. Just check yourself once a month and it could save your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
