Is it finally the breakaway\u2019s turn at the 2026 Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/a>? So far, it\u2019s been time trials, sprints, and climbs in Spain. But the fifth stage finally seems to offer a chance for the riders with ambitions to break away. But there\u2019s still a huge, nasty twist in store on this treacherous stage. IDL Pro Cycling brings you everything you need to know.Stage 6 Route, 2026 Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a\"vuelta-6\"\/After Wednesday\u2019s sprint opportunity, Thursday\u2019s stage will be a completely different affair. The 178-kilometer course features 3,000 meters of elevation gain. The start is in Alcossebre<\/a>, and the finish is in Castell\u00f3n de la Plana. From the starting point, the route winds uphill and downhill for about twenty kilometers before the real climbing begins with the Puerto de La Serratella (14.1 km at a 3.9 percent grade).<\/p>\n

So that climb isn\u2019t steep, but it is long. After a descent and a valley, the route passes through the Coll de la Bandereta, after which it\u2019s mostly downhill. The peloton heads south through the hilly terrain near Valencia. The riders slowly make their way back to the coast, where there\u2019s an intermediate sprint in Benic\u00e0ssim, nearly sixty kilometers from the finish.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where the Alto del Desierto de las Palmas begins. It\u2019s quite a mouthful, but it\u2019s not the toughest climb of the day. It\u2019s 7.5 kilometers long, with an average gradient of 5.1 percent. The steepest sections reach about 9 percent, so it\u2019s certainly not a leg-breaker. But it is a nice warm-up for what\u2019s to come. After a loop back to Benic\u00e0ssim, riders begin the final climb of the day.<\/p>\n

For the first few kilometers, it\u2019s exactly the same as the previous climb, but then you turn right. And suddenly, it\u2019s a whole different beast. The Puerto El Bartolo is 9.4 kilometers at a 7 percent grade, but the second half is a real monster. The final three kilometers never dip below 8 percent, and even reach a maximum gradient of up to 20 percent!<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not even the only unique feature of that climb. The final kilometers are also unpaved. It makes it a sort of mini-Finestre in Spain. The summit is twenty kilometers from the finish line, after which a long descent follows. The final nine kilometers are virtually flat, with a fairly winding route to the finish.<\/p>\n

Stage 6 Weather Forecast for the 2026 Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/p>\n

A scorching hot day, with 31 degrees at the start and a few extra degrees at the finish. No rain, but it\u2019s windy. The wind is coming from the south, which means there might still be a risk of echelons here and there.<\/p>\n

Favorites for Stage 6 of the 2026 Vuelta a Espa\u00f1aIt\u2019s a stage that\u2019s usually a great opportunity for the mavericks, but that final climb can really turn everything upside down. Pogi\u2019s law applies here as well: if Tadej Pogacar<\/a> wants to win, he\u2019ll simply do it. With its staggering gradients and unpaved surface, that final climb is tailor-made for him.<\/p>\n

Other general classification contenders who are likely to perform well here include Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM), Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Oscar Onley (Netcompany INEOS), and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost). They\u2019re the best climbers, but they\u2019re also riders who occasionally enjoy a bit of rough-and-tumble racing and aggressive riding.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re ranking Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Sepp Kuss (Visma | Lease a Bike), and Enric Mas (Movistar) slightly lower. Jarno Widar (Lotto-Intermarch\u00e9) does enjoy explosive climbing, so we\u2019re including him as well, especially after his second-place finish in Andorra. Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) had a bad day back then, but he really needs to excel on days like this.<\/p>\n

If it doesn\u2019t turn into a battle among the general classification contenders, there will be more than enough strong attackers hoping for their big moment. Can Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) survive this? It seems unlikely, but who knows. There are certainly plenty of riders like him, such as Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) or Axel Laurance (Netcompany INEOS).<\/p>\n

But we\u2019re mainly keeping an eye on the riders who are slightly better climbers. With Ra\u00fal Garc\u00eda Pierna, Pablo Castrillo, and Iv\u00e1n Romeo, Movistar has three natural attackers on the team who will definitely have their own plans. UAE Team Emirates-XRG is also fielding a strong squad, however: if Pogacar gives them some space, riders like Kevin Vermaerke and Pavel Sivakov will have a chance to make a move. If Visma doesn\u2019t go for Van Aert, they could go for Ben Tulett instead.<\/p>\n

Pello Bilbao and Santiago Buitrago are the key riders for Bahrain Victorious, while Jayco AlUla can count on Finlay Pickering, Paul Double, Koen Bouwman, and Alessandro Covi. Equipo Kern Pharma has Iv\u00e1n Ramiro Sosa, Urko Berrade, Ibon Ruiz, and Mats Wenzel. Andreas Leknessund, Andreas Kron, and Fredrik Dversnes could make an impact for Uno-X Mobility, while EF Education-EasyPost features riders such as Juan Felipe Rodriguez, James Shaw, and Georg Steinhauser.<\/p>\n

Soudal Quick-Step will field attackers such as Valentin Paret-Peintre, Filippo Zana, and Gianmarco Garofoli as contenders, while Groupama-FDJ is counting on Cl\u00e9ment Berthet, R\u00e9my Rochas, and Guillaume Martin. Pinarello – Q36.5 could put Milan Vader, as well as Eddie Dunbar and Thomas Gloag, in the spotlight. In short: plenty of contenders!<\/p>\n
