If you take medication for an underactive thyroid, check your bottle right away. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued <\/a>a recall alert<\/a> on August 24 for one lot of thyroid tablets that could have concerning reverse effects on your health.<\/p>\n

On August 21, Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc. announced a voluntary recall of one lot (Lot No. 504950) of Thyroid Tablets, USP 30 mg, which was distributed nationwide. The notice says 3,655 units were released but only 1,955 units were sold. Those were first distributed on January 21, 2025, and last distributed on September 30, 2026.<\/p>\n

During testing, the tablets were confirmed to be potentially super potent. This means that even though this medication is prescribed for <\/a>hypothyroidism<\/a>, it could actually cause <\/a>hyperthyroidism,<\/a> in which your body makes too much thyroid hormone. The medication is composed of two thyroid hormones: levothyroxine<\/a> and <\/a>liothyronine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A risk statement included in the recall alert states that taking the tablets could cause symptoms including weight loss, heat intolerance, fatigue, nervousness, muscle weakness, hypertension, chest pain, rapid heart rate, or heart rhythm disturbances.<\/p>\n

In addition, the statement noted that adverse cardiac effects for elderly people taking the tablets are possible, and that overtreatment of hypothyroidism during pregnancy could result in premature delivery and low birth weight.<\/p>\n

Luckily, Vitruvias has not received any reports of adverse side effects related to the recall. But you should still call your doctor right away. This is very important, because Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc. is instructing consumers not to discontinue use of the drug until they speak with their health care provider.
