Nearly 100 artworks are now on display in the Community Gallery at Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries as part of the exhibition, titled Historic Dunfermline Through the Eyes of Children.

The pieces were created by children aged five to 12 as part of a summer art challenge organised by the City of Dunfermline Heritage Group in collaboration with Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all the children and parents who took part.

“The artworks are wonderful, colourful and full of imagination.

“More importantly, they give us a glimpse into Dunfermline through the eyes of its youngest residents – what they notice, what they love and what is important to them.”

Children were invited to draw a historic place, person, or scene from Dunfermline that inspired them.

The challenge formed part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Scottish Academy.

The spokesperson continued saying: “This summer project has been a beautiful example of collaboration between generations.

“It is important to consider why we preserve our historic heritage and what Dunfermline’s history means to the next generation.

“Through the eyes of our children, we can see what they value about their home City and, as adults, help them to understand, appreciate and protect its heritage.”

Themes in the exhibition include Dunfermline’s iconic peacocks, vibrant interpretations of the Abbey, and depictions of historical figures such as Andrew Carnegie, Saint Margaret, and Robert the Bruce.

The project began with two art workshops at the library and galleries, led by Dunfermline artist Lynn Crombie and supported by the Royal Scottish Academy.

During the workshops, 34 children explored watercolours and learned new artistic techniques.

The organisers received close to 100 entries, which are now displayed for the public to enjoy.

The City of Dunfermline Heritage Group also extended thanks to supporting organisations including Fife Charities Trust, the Royal Scottish Academy, Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, and Dunfermline Greenspace.

Their support enabled the creation of 95 art kits, helping to ensure the challenge was accessible to all.
