golf captain&#8217;s 13-round challenge for Bolton Hospice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  It\u2019s all in a good cause raising money for Bolton Hospice in memory of his mother-in-law, Christine Gorton who passed away there two years ago.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His bumper five days of golf will see him playing at Chorley Golf Club, Deane, Hindley Hall, Bolton, Bolton Old Links, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/westhoughton\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Westhoughton<\/a>, Breightmet, Dunscar, Great Lever, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/25946375.harwood-golf-club-bolton-celebrate-100th-anniversary\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Harwood<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/26463568.dairy-farm-golf-course---story-hart-common-golf-club\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hart Common<\/a>, Regent Park and Turton GC on the final day.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Christine Gorton (Image: Supplied)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He starts these memorable rounds on Wednesday at three different clubs, followed by three more on Thursday and Friday and another two each on Saturday and Sunday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI\u2019ve got buggies sorted for at least some of them,\u201d explained Steve, who plays off 18.5. \u201cI don\u2019t think I could do all that each day without them!\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The 54-year-old has also got playing companions lined up, from his friends to Turton Lady Captain Catherine Wroe whose mother Margaret Lawson had \u201ca beautiful death\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/26483780.bolton-woman-hails-much-needed-support-hospice-hub\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hospice<\/a> 14 years ago.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The fundraising teed off with a special golf event at Turton involving 17 teams including corporates.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A raffle and auction kickstarted the fundraising to \u00a33,400 and, added Steve, \u201cthere has been a lot of help and support from other clubs keen to help the Hospice.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Christine, a devoted mother and grandmother, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She was a former hairdresser who worked in salons across Bolton before joining the family businesses including Motler\u2019s Butchers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/farnworth\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Farnworth<\/a> and Bolton Snooker and Social Club.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She later became the proud owner of The Butty Box on Manchester Road where her friendly personality and warm smile were known to many.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Daughter Amanda stated: \u201cShe faced her illness with courage and determination, receiving treatment at both Bolton Hospital and The Christie.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In April, 2024, she spent two weeks at Bolton Hospice to help manage her pain and improve her comfort and returned there shortly before July, 2024 where she spent her final three weeks.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe care, compassion and kindness shown by the Hospice staff was truly exceptional,\u201d said Amanda.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThey not only cared for her with dignity and respect but also provided invaluable support to her family during an incredibly difficult time.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Commented Steve: \u201cThe Hospice is an unbelievable, special place and it\u2019s a disgrace that they\u2019ve had funding cut and have to raise more themselves.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe are more than happy to
