At just 17 years old, Hill\u00adview College student Tyler Ramroop has already distinguished himself in the classroom and on the cricket field, proving that academic and sporting excellence can go hand in hand.<\/p>\n
Tyler attained eight Grade Ones and an A in the 2026 Caribbean Seconda\u00adry Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations while maintaining a demanding schedule representing his school, club, zone and country in cricket.<\/p>\n
Among his academic achievements, his distinction in mathematics meant the most\u2014not because the subject came easily but because it demanded his greatest effort.<\/p>\n
\u201cMathematics meant the most because it was the subject that did not come as naturally as the others, and I had to work hard to make sure I was comfortable with it,\u201d Tyler told the Express during telephone interviews this week.<\/p>\n
His results capped another successful year for the young sportsman who was selected for the national Under-19 cricket team that participated in the West Indies Rising Stars Men\u2019s Under-\u00ad19 Championship.<\/p>\n
Tyler also plays Premiership I cricket with Merry Boys Sports Club and made his senior club debut in 2025 at just 15.<\/p>\n
His father, Vido Ramroop, said Tyler has consis\u00adtently demonstrated an abi\u00adlity to balance academic and sporting excellence.<\/p>\n
In 2021, Tyler placed first among male students in the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) examination while playing Under-13 cricket for his zone. He sub\u00adsequently represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Under-13 level.<\/p>\n
Over the following years, he continued to rank among Hillview College\u2019s top students while regularly repre\u00adsenting his zone, club and country in cricket.<\/p>\n
His father said what made Tyler\u2019s accomplishments even more remarkable was that he never at\u00adten\u00added extra lessons du\u00adring primary or secondary school.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe demonstrated pro\u00adper discipline, time man\u00adage\u00adment and focus at school so he could have the time for his cricket,\u201d the elder Ramroop said.<\/p>\n
In addition to cricket, Tyler participates in sprint training and kickboxing.<\/p>\n
Tyler said balancing aca\u00addemics and sport required him to use his limited time wisely, realising that he would not have as much time to study as students focused mainly on academics, or as much time to train as athletes dedicated primarily to sport.<\/p>\n
Once he accepted that reality, he knew he had to work smarter.<\/p>\n
The teenager said he paid close attention during classes to ensure he understood the material and used free periods to begin homework and assignments. School, club and zonal cricket practices, as well as strength and conditioning sessions, meant he often returned home after dark.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, it was a personal choice to want to do well in school,\u201d he said. \u201cI naturally had that desire to do well, and I knew the packed times would be temporary, so I kept myself going.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler did not rely on strict study timetables or spe\u00adcially prepared notes. Instead, he obtained the syllabuses and available past papers and ensured he understood each topic.<\/p>\n
As the examinations approached, he reviewed his class notes and spent more time on subjects with hea\u00advier content.<\/p>\n
When the cricket sche\u00addule eased, Tyler increased his study time, focusing on understanding the theory before attempting questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce I understood the theory, reviewing questions helped me a lot, as the answers stuck in my head better that way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Like many students, Tyler experienced periods of exhaustion, discouragement and feeling overwhelmed. During those moments, he reminded himself that pursuing success in both cricket and academics was his choice.<\/p>\n
Live in the moment<\/p>\n
Though passionate about the sport, he recognised that a sound education was essential to securing his future.<\/p>\n
He also learnt when to step away from his books.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes I just stopped studying and did other things because too much will stop making it fun,\u201d Tyler said. \u201cKnowing when to take a break is the main thing because, as humans, we do get burnt out.\u201d<\/p>\n
His advice to other students is to trust themselves after putting in the work, take breaks and avoid becoming consumed by thoughts of the outcome.<\/p>\n
\u201cLive in the moment. Don\u2019t think about the outcome while you are still in the process,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce the process is fun, you will be fulfilled before the outcome even hits.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler credited his father and his mother, Lana Ramroop, for their unwavering support; his 91-year-old grandmother, Dhano Ramroop, whom he calls \u201cAgee\u201d, for providing a strong spiritual foundation; and his cricket and strength and conditioning coaches for making the journey enjoyable.<\/p>\n
He said Hillview College had also helped him develop discipline, form friend\u00adships with students from different backgrounds, and benefit from teachers whose encouraging words pushed him to become the best version of himself.<\/p>\n
Tyler will return to Hillview College to pursue Form Six studies.
