Milo Yiannopoulos, the British far-right commentator who was arrested<\/a> last week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE<\/a>) officers in Louisiana and deported to the United Kingdom, has broken his silence about the experience, saying that \u201cfor the first time I know what it feels like to be really, really terrified\u201d.<\/p>\n

Yiannopoulos on Tuesday appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored<\/a>, a YouTube show presented by Piers Morgan<\/a>, the British broadcaster and media personality. Yiannopoulos, 41, described the experience in the US as \u201chumiliating and disorientating\u201d, \u201cphysically degrading\u201d and \u201cfrightening\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also said that he was \u201cashamed\u201d of his previous support for Donald Trump, who has pursued an agenda<\/a> of mass deportation throughout his second presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really understand the physical reality of how institutionalized the brutality is in America\u201d he said, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s like everybody that\u2019s arrested is an MS-13 gang<\/a> member, and it hurts a lot more than it looks like on television.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks came just days after he was deported<\/a> from the US, after being arrested on Thursday<\/a> by ICE officers at New Orleans airport.<\/p>\n

In a statement last week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the parent agency<\/a> of ICE, said Yiannopoulos had \u201clegally entered the country\u201d in May 2019, but \u201cchose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation\u2019s laws\u201d.<\/p>\n

Yiannopoulos was an early supporter<\/a> of Trump before he first became US president in 2016. He is a former editor of Breitbart News<\/a> and later worked to help the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West<\/a>, explore a presidential run <\/a>in 2024.<\/p>\n

The homeland security department said Yiannopoulos was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge on 22 July \u201cafter failing to show up for his immigration hearing\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the Piers Morgan interview, Yiannopoulos disputed the government\u2019s account and denied previously overstaying a visa. He said he is married to an American, and claimed he held a green card that he was \u201crenewing on a two-year basis\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Guardian has contacted homeland security and the White House for comment on Yiannopoulos\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

Yiannopoulos also said that while he was detained, \u201cno one would tell me anything\u201d \u2013 a common complaint from people held in ICE custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever been frightened like that before\u201d he told Morgan. \u201cI think maybe in the past I\u2019ve been a little bit blas\u00e9 when people talked about their trauma, a little bit cavalier when people talked about stuff kind of lingering with them, but I get it now \u2026 I wouldn\u2019t wish it on anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, in posts on social media, Yiannopoulos had been supportive <\/a>of Trump\u2019s crackdown on immigration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In one<\/a> post, he wrote: \u201cThere is one concrete thing we must insist on this administration delivering. It matters a lot more than debts measured in imaginary money. We have got to deport millions and millions and millions of people. Without that, nothing else matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another post<\/a>, Yiannopoulos had said that California \u201cneeds ICE checkpoints at supermarket entrances, gas stations, strip malls, intersections and government buildings, with on the spot deportation for anyone who can\u2019t prove they are in the US legally\u201d.<\/p>\n
