Match scorecard<\/a><\/p>\nMohammed Bin Naeem scored a nerveless half-century on debut to put Derbyshire in a strong position at the halfway stage of their County Championship match against Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium.<\/p>\n
The 20-year-old posted 71 from 119 balls and staged stands of 70 and 91 with Harry Came and Matthew Montgomery for the first and second wickets respectively as the visitors reached stumps on 162-2. <\/p>\n
Trailing by just 75, Derbyshire are handily placed to establish a meaningful first-innings lead on a surface which is expected to offer some assistance to spin on days three and four.<\/p>\n
James Bracey’s 20th first-class hundred had earlier spearheaded a spirited Gloucestershire fightback. Gloucestershire’s leading run-scorer posted a gritty 113 and staged stands of 43, 49 and 79 with Ed Middleton, Sai Kishore and Will Williams for the sixth, seventh and eighth wickets respectively as the home side recovered from the wreckage of 37-5 on day one to post 237. <\/p>\n
Brett Randell was the pick of the Derbyshire bowlers, returning figures of 5-41 from 17.2 overs.<\/p>\n
Resuming on 62-5 and in some peril, Gloucestershire were indebted to Bracey, who demonstrated character aplenty to orchestrate a concerted fightback and frustrate the Derbyshire bowlers.<\/p>\n
After nine overs were lost to rain, Ben Aitchison effected an early breakthrough, locating the outside edge to have Middleton caught behind for 17. But Guest then blotted his copybook, dropping Bracey on 39 via an inside edge off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir.<\/p>\n
Bracey made them pay, driving Aitchison through the covers for his fifth four to raise a crucial 50 from 90 deliveries. Kishore provided welcome support, straight-driving Shoaib for six in an eventful knock of 22 before nicking off to become Randell’s third victim. That was as good as it got for the visitors, Bracey and Williams advancing the score to 138-7 at lunch.<\/p>\n
Having scored 98 against the same opponents at Derby in April, Williams again proved a thorn in the side of East Midlands ambition, batting stoically in the cause of securing a hundred for Bracey. <\/p>\n
These two added 50 via 103 balls and Bracey then swatted a short delivery from Aitchison on to the leg side to bring up his fourth hundred of an increasingly productive season. <\/p>\n
His superbly-fashioned innings spanned four hours and 166 balls and included 12 fours and, when he finally succumbed, it was to a tired-looking shot, the left-hander edging a ball from Martin Andersson to Guest and departing with the score 207-8.<\/p>\n
New Zealander Randell returned to finish off the tail, generating late swing to have Matt Taylor caught at the wicket and then utilising the new ball to persuade Williams to edge to first slip. Randell celebrated his five-for, but Williams could be equally satisfied with his backs-to-the-wall contribution of 42 from 106 balls with a quartet of boundaries.<\/p>\n
Derbyshire openers Came and Bin Naeem saw off the new-ball threat posed by Williams and loan signing James Hayes, persuading the home side to call upon slow left-armer Kishore as early as the 12th over.<\/p>\n
Affording the Indian international maximum respect, these two advanced cautiously, chiseling a chanceless 50 partnership from 18 overs. Given that Kishore extracted no more than a modicum of turn of a slow pitch, batting became a relatively straightforward business during a long final session. Gloucestershire needed a breakthrough and Williams obliged, pinning Came lbw seven runs short of a half century.<\/p>\n
Bin Naeem went to 50 via 95 balls with six fours and a six, displaying maturity beyond his years to force the Gloucestershire bowlers onto the back foot. He became the first Derbyshire player to score a half-century on debut since Tony Borrington made 70 against Essex at Ilford in 1971. <\/p>\n
His innings came to an end in the penultimate over of the day, Kishore having him caught at the wicket. But there was no moving Montgomery, who batted with authority to advance his score to 40 not out by the close.<\/p>\n
