It\u2019s only taken four seasons but Ted Lasso<\/a> has finally paid homage to one of the most famous British football memes: Delia Smith<\/a>\u2019s rallying cry of \u201clet\u2019s be \u2018avin\u2019 you!\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

The Apple TV+ sitcom, starring Jason Sudeikis<\/a> as an American football coach initially hired as a joke to coach Richmond AFC, saw Hannah Waddingham\u2019s character emulate the iconic moment in this week\u2019s episode. <\/p>\n

In one scene of Wednesday\u2019s episode, Waddingham\u2019s Rebecca Welton \u2013 the owner of Richmond AFC\u2019s women\u2019s team \u2013 drunkenly takes the microphone at one of the team\u2019s games after noticing that fan attendance has dropped. Speaking down the camera lens of the network broadcasting the game, a slurring Rebecca shouts: \u201cNow, a message for the greatest football supporters in the world who are not here today. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are you? Am I right? Where are you?\u201c she continued, before leading the crowd in a chant of that very phrase. <\/p>\n

Fans were quick to spot that Rebecca\u2019s speech was similar to the one TV chef Delia Smith made at a 2005 Premier League game between Manchester City and Norwich City. Rallying the crowd during halftime, Smith \u2013 who was a majority shareholder in Norwich City at the time \u2013 took the microphone from the club announcer on the football pitch and said: \u201cA message for the best football supporters in the world: we need a 12th man here. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are you? Where are you? Let’s be ‘avin’ you! Come on!\u201d she yelled. <\/p>\n

Viewers took to X to comment on the similarities, with one writing alongside a video of Smith: \u201cJust when I thought I couldn\u2019t love the scene with Rebecca drunkenly shouting \u2018WHEEERE ARRE YOUUU!!\u2019 repeatedly anymore than I already do, I find out it\u2019s based on this real life moment! #TedLasso\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor international #TedLasso fans, Rebecca’s drunken call to arms is a homage to a real incident where England’s best known staid, prim, middle-class TV cook, Delia Smith, railed on the fans of her team,\u201d another wrote on X. \u201cAn iconic Brit culture moment!\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Norwich lost the match 3-2 and Smith issued a statement to defend her outburst. \u201cMy message to the fans was a totally spontaneous appeal from the heart aimed at trying to do everything we could to get behind Nigel Worthington and the team,\u201d she said at the time, adding that \u201cmaybe in the heat of the moment I didn\u2019t choose the best words\u201d.<\/p>\n

While on Desert Island Discs in 2024, Smith said that she completely forgot cameras were there when she made the speech, and while it\u2019s \u201clovely\u201d that fans quote the moment back to her, the initial reaction \u201cwasn\u2019t wonderful\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe first week there were people in the press saying I should be brought before a disciplinary committee at the FA,\u201d she said. \u201cI go to away matches and they all call out \u2018let\u2019s be having you, Delia\u2019. It\u2019s lovely, I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith previously held a majority shareholding of 53 per cent with her husband Michael Wynn-Jones, with the pair also being club directors and honorary life presidents, but their involvement with the club came to an end after 28 years in 2024. <\/p>\n
