{"id":760206,"date":"2026-09-04T23:02:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T23:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/760206\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T23:02:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T23:02:14","slug":"potential-for-pine-martens-return-to-south-east-findings-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/760206\/","title":{"rendered":"Potential for pine martens&#8217; return to South East, findings show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There is potential for pine martens to return to their former habitats in south-east England, new research has shown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pine marten, a cat-sized animal from the weasel family, became extinct in most of England and Wales in the early 20th Century, according to Kent Wildlife Trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c04r42p4zkdo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study as part of the South East Pine Marten Restoration Project<\/a> shows that the animal is most likely to thrive in areas with extensive woodland cover, with suitable habitats identified in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lead author Ella Lewis, nature-based solutions and evidence officer for the trust, said: &#8220;These new findings present the exciting potential for pine martens to return to their former range in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lewis said that the animals brought benefits to their habitats including seed dispersal while balancing and boosting woodland ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The findings from the study will help assess the feasibility of restoring the animal to parts of the country where they used to thrive, the trust said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Along with the South East, suitable habitats have been identified in Gloucestershire, East Yorkshire and East Anglia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The trust said: &#8220;Understanding where suitable habitat exists is a vital first step in assessing whether future reintroductions could be successful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Currently, pine martens are largely confined to Scotland, with small populations in England and Wales where they are &#8220;critically endangered&#8221;, according to the trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The South East Pine Marten Restoration Project is a partnership led by Kent Wildlife Trust and Wildwood Trust, with Sussex Wildlife Trust, The Conservators of Ashdown Forest and Forestry England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Follow BBC Kent on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BBCinKent\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook, external<\/a>, on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCRadioKent\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X, external<\/a>, and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bbcinkent\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram, external<\/a> and listen to BBC Radio Kent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/live\/bbc_radio_kent\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Sounds<\/a>.
