Its core strengths are swiping and prediction, along with excellent multi-language support.

Plus, the clipboard management and cross-device syncing make it an invaluable tool for someone who types thousands of words a day.

The voice input, however, was a major letdown.

Although it supports multi-modal voice typing, it was painfully slow at speech-to-text recognition. The accuracy was modest at best, so I avoided voice input altogether when it was my default keyboard.

A secondary language that I regularly used on Gboard was also missing.

Still, it served as my default keyboard for several weeks before I finally switched to the beta channel.

All I can say is that I regret not making the jump sooner.

But for anyone who primarily relies on swipe typing and multi-language support, the stable SwiftKey build is still a solid keyboard.

                    Related

I’ve been a Gboard fanatic for over 10 years, but this genius keyboard made me ditch it

I finally found an Android keyboard that syncs seamlessly with my PC

                        Microsoft SwiftKey Beta

It fixes my complaints with smarter voice and multilingual swipe

After installing SwiftKey Beta, I put the AI-powered voice typing through its paces.

The difference between it and the stable version is night and day. I can use multi-modal input more confidently now.

It processes words and phrases much faster, too. I put it side-by-side with Gboard’s voice dictation, and the processing speed felt just as fast.

More importantly, the beta has fewer misses and inaccuracies, likely thanks to the upgraded AI model.

What it still lacks, however, is speech recognition for niche, secondary languages (which is also true for Gboard).

Speaking of languages, the beta offers a wider selection to download. I added two distinct dialects, and they worked simultaneously with the main languages I originally set up.

Multi-language support extends seamlessly to autocorrect and text predictions, which is incredibly handy.

Even more impressive, glide typing works across multiple languages without manually switching layouts. This is where SwiftKey easily beats Gboard.

While Google’s keyboard supports multilingual typing, it usually limits you to two or three languages depending on the layout mode.

What is still missing in SwiftKey Beta is font and text size scaling, which Gboard handles effortlessly.

It is not an absolute deal-breaker, but it is a quality-of-life feature I hope the developers add down the road.

                        FUTO Keyboard

Uncompromised privacy with your data secure on your device

If there is a runner-up to SwiftKey, it is definitely FUTO Keyboard. It is easily the most lightweight, minimalist open source keyboard I tested.

What I appreciate most is the privacy control available out of the box. Core functions run offline without requiring an account, even for voice dictation.

All typing patterns, dictionary data, and personal inputs stay on the device. That should satisfy anyone uncomfortable with letting Google or Microsoft log their keystrokes and sensitive data.

It also excels in customization, allowing you to import and export dictionaries or choose which language model runs locally on your hardware.

FUTO ships with reliable text prediction, and its accuracy improves steadily after a few days of regular use. If you type constantly as I do, the model trains even faster.

I really enjoyed the glide typing experience. The micro-gestures, like flick shortcuts and quick cursor control from the space bar, work smoothly.

I wanted to keep FUTO as my daily driver, but its language catalog remains limited compared to SwiftKey or Gboard.

The clipboard also feels clumsy to use. It lacks intuitive management for pinned snippets, and there is no cross-device sync.

Still, if you prioritize privacy and a lightweight footprint, FUTO is easily one of the best independent keyboard app options available.

                        Samsung Keyboard

            Deep Galaxy integration is phenomenal

I admit that I avoided Samsung Keyboard for years, even while driving multiple Galaxy devices.

Lately, though, I have settled on it as my primary keyboard, especially on my Galaxy Tab.

Out of the box, it offers deep integration with One UI, including native S Pen handwriting support on my tablet.

Samsung has also refined its text prediction engine, resolving one of the main issues that originally drove me toward Gboard. The longer I use it, the more I appreciate the improvements.

It still has a few rough edges, particularly with voice input, but Samsung is steadily refining that through newer on-device AI models.

Another major reason I stick with it is deep visual customization. With Good Lock suite’s Keys Café, I can tweak key shapes, color effects, and touch animations in ways third-party keyboards cannot match.

For long-time Galaxy users, the universal system clipboard is rock solid.

If it were not exclusive to the Samsung ecosystem, I would probably have it installed on my Pixel phone, too.

If you live on a Galaxy phone or tablet, there is little reason to leave Samsung Keyboard behind.

                    Related

I stopped using Google Gboard the moment I discovered what Samsung Keyboard could do

Samsung Keyboard outshines its major competition with these features

                        Gboard (is still great)

Its dictation is hard to beat

Gboard is not an awful keyboard.

Over the decade I spent using it, the voice typing remained exceptional. Its swipe input has matured, and the predictive engine holds its own against Microsoft SwiftKey.

The built-in Google Translate integration is still tough to beat, which is reason enough for many people to stay put. The Emoji Kitchen also remains a delightful tool to flood or make chats more fun.

However, Gboard increasingly feels like an (unbreakable) data pipeline rather than a dedicated utility.

There is no simple way to opt out of Google’s data harvesting, and a true offline mode remains absent without crippling these advanced features.

Customization has also stagnated. Beyond dynamic Material You palette matching, power-user visual tweaks are practically nonexistent except for uploading your own photo, and layout mode options are still limited.

The same applies to the clipboard. It remains rigid, and the total lack of native cross-device syncing makes it hard to stick with for power users or typists.

                    Related

I switched from Android’s default keyboard to an open source alternative to eliminate my constant typos

Worse autocorrect became the upgrade I needed

I don’t have plans to replace Microsoft SwiftKey Beta

Right now, I am sticking with Microsoft SwiftKey Beta.
