{"id":761938,"date":"2026-09-06T14:10:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T14:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/761938\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T14:10:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T14:10:10","slug":"cromer-litter-pickers-felt-embarrassed-for-their-lovely-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/761938\/","title":{"rendered":"Cromer litter pickers &#8216;felt embarrassed&#8217; for their &#8216;lovely town&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">With a range of picturesque beaches, north Norfolk remains a popular destination for visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But like most parts of England, fly-tipping is an issue and earlier this year there were high-profile cases of littering on beaches in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/creplexzw21o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cromer<\/a> and Wells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">With temperatures soaring to 30C (86F), the council&#8217;s clean-up in Cromer took two days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Not long after, Bates, who moved to the town last year, put out an appeal for volunteers to pick litter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said 45 people had signed up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We felt kind of embarrassed that our lovely little town was getting the wrong headlines about having litter,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been doing two picks a week [collecting] bagfuls and bagfuls of rubbish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You walk around, there&#8217;s tourists, there&#8217;s locals all saying &#8216;well done&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"With a range of picturesque beaches, north Norfolk remains a popular destination for visitors.
