Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has once again ridiculed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for his suggestion that the American economy is doing well some two months before the midterm elections\u00a0and showing no signs of\u00a0strain\u00a0from\u00a0its war of aggression on Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a Saturday post on his X account, Qalibaf mentioned a recent interview Bessent had with Fox News in which he said the US economy is in the “liftoff phase” before the midterms.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Bessent suggested in the interview that oil prices could drop to $40\u2013$50 from current highs of $80\u2013$90, caused by Iran\u2019s restrictions on energy flow in the Persian Gulf, which have come in response to US aggression against the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Qalibaf said the US economy would need some serious “warm-ups” before it actually lifts off.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said Washington needs to do something about all-time record prices of fuel and issues like falling yields of dollar-denominated bonds, which have caused huge sell-offs by major bond holders like Japan and Norway.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Iranian Parliament speaker also made a reference to low recruitment rates in the US military and expert warnings about rising inflation that could trigger interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, a policy hugely disliked by Bessent and his boss, US President Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The comments come amid growing concern in the ruling Republican Party that it could suffer a major defeat in US midterm elections because of Trump\u2019s joint aggression with Israel against Iran, which has yet to fully conclude, some five months after it ended as part of a ceasefire in mid-April.\u00a0<\/p>\n
