{"id":76308,"date":"2025-08-18T21:17:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T21:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/76308\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T21:17:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T21:17:06","slug":"creature-spotted-off-devon-coast-thats-easily-mistaken-for-a-shark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/76308\/","title":{"rendered":"Creature spotted off Devon coast that&#8217;s easily mistaken for a shark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They&#8217;re the second largest bony fish in the world<\/p>\n<p>15:25, 18 Aug 2025Updated 16:31, 18 Aug 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This odd looking fish was spotted off the coast of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/all-about\/ilfracombe\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ilfracombe<\/a> while a local company was out on a sea safari.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The ocean Sunfish, also known as Mola Mola, is a huge, flat and circular fish that is often spotted swimming on its side to bask in the sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Experts suggest that they do this to raise their temperature after diving down to cooler waters to feed. Their fin can be mistaken for a shark as it sticks out the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They\u2019re pretty common in the UK but often stay away from the shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Ilfracombe Sea Safari spotted the creature far off the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/all-about\/north-devon\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">North Devon<\/a> coast last Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They feed mostly on jellyfish and species that live on the sea floor like crustaceans and molluscs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They\u2019re mostly seen in the summer months in the UK and are considered the second largest bony fish in the world after the southern sunfish, which is slightly larger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nancy Hutchings at Ilfracombe Sea Safari said that they see them almost every day whilst out on their trips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThey\u2019re really peculiar things, we\u2019ve seen quite big ones and more frequently over the last 2 to 3 weeks,\u201d Nancy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;When it is sunny, funnily enough, when we have calm days we see them daily, they&#8217;re around quite a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They do stay off the coast, they don&#8217;t tend to come into the harbour. They&#8217;re fascinating, the way that they swim.
