{"id":763652,"date":"2026-09-08T06:08:27","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T06:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/763652\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T06:08:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T06:08:27","slug":"alcaraz-ditches-tennis-player-group-demanding-prize-money-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/763652\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcaraz ditches tennis player group demanding prize money hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tMonday 07 September 2026 2:27 pm<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMonday 07 September 2026 2:28 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2293559460-e1788787474573.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Tennis player in brown and white athletic wear, holding a racket, fist clenched, US Open background\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tReigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has left a player lobby group\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from a group of top tennis stars demanding a larger proportion of prize money from the four grand slam tournaments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spaniard, who will take on US star Ben Shelton in a quarter-final match-up this evening, was initially part of a group which chose to take on some of the sport\u2019s biggest chiefs \u2013 the executives of the US, French and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/tennis-record-prize-money-for-australian-open-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Australian Opens<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/wimbledon-hmrc-set-to-slap-sinner-and-noskova-with-1-6m-tax-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Wimbledon<\/a> \u2013 demanding a greater share of prize money relative to grand slam revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the World No3 has broken rank, those with knowledge of the matter have confirmed to City AM, in what many will see as a major body blow to the rebel plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 20 best players in the world \u2013 the top 10 men and top 10 women \u2013 have been fighting with tennis chiefs for 18 months, and have set a target of the prize pot at any one of the four grand slams being equivalent to 22 per cent of the tournament\u2019s revenue, to be achieved by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>US Open prize money<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French Open saw players protest against prize money by slashing their media obligations, while there were grumbles about the total purse offered at Wimbledon despite a major hike to upwards of \u00a364m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes as the men\u2019s game\u2019s governing body, the ATP, earlier this year announced a reduction in appearance obligations for players, while the women\u2019s WTA is looking at a similar move that could change the calendar and reduce body stress for players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think they [tennis bosses] are adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usopen.org\/en_US\/scores\/schedule\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">more important tournaments<\/a>,\u201d seven-time grand slam champion Alcaraz said in a press conference this week after beating Tommy Paul. \u201cYou know, in a way they are making us play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/wimbledon-hikes-prize-money-but-refuses-to-bow-to-tennis-stars-demands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">But there are some Masters<\/a> 1000s, some grand-slams, and we\u2019ll be playing 40 weeks if we have got to play every mandatory tournament that the ATP requires us to, so it\u2019s impossible, and we are seeing a lot of players getting injured, a lot of players getting tired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m going to miss some tournaments in the future, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/billionaire-ackman-slams-us-open-ticket-prices-as-absurd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Billionaire Ackman slams US Open ticket prices as absurd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
