The Blaze kept on course for a clean sweep of domestic trophies as a six-wicket bonus point victory over Somerset maintained their grip on top spot in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup women\u2019s competition, needing one win from their last two fixtures to guarantee their place in the Final on September 19.<\/p>\n

Somerset captain Sophie Luff made her fourth half-century of the 50-over season, Alex Griffiths (38) and Niamh Holland (32) also impressed but a score of 192 all out in 46.1 overs always felt like too little against a team that had won seven run chases out of nine before this one.<\/p>\n

So it proved as unbeaten half-centuries from Sarah Bryce (54 from 65 balls) and Emma Jones (53 off 44) saw The Blaze home with 11.3 overs to spare after Tammy Beaumont had earlier made 39.<\/p>\n

Spinner Lucy Higham impressed with four for 28 for The Blaze and there were two wickets each for Grace Ballinger and Kirstie Gordon after The Blaze had won the toss.<\/p>\n

Somerset are still in a race with Warwickshire for third spot in the table and a place in the eliminator round, going into the last week just one point behind the Edgbaston-based side. Both have two matches left.<\/p>\n

On the pitch used for Nottinghamshire\u2019s four-day match against Leicestershire that ended on Saturday, Somerset managed only two boundaries in the opening powerplay, losing Bex Odgers and Emma Corney as they struggled to 22 for two from 10.<\/p>\n

Luff regularly stepped down the pitch to drive profitably, her half-century from 55 deliveries with seven fours dominating a 66-run partnership with Holland. But she missed a ball pushed wide by Kathryn Bryce and was stumped.<\/p>\n

Wickets then fell at regular intervals. After Holland was bowled by a grubber, Jess Hazell found extra cover before Higham\u2019s skilful, loopy off-spin accounted for Katie Jones (stumped), Jazz Westley (caught long-on), Chloe Skelton and Griffiths (bowled) before Ballinger bowled Lola Harris to finish the innings.<\/p>\n

In pursuit of their target, The Blaze likewise lost two wickets in the powerplay, Prisha Thanawala (caught at slip) and Kathryn Bryce (caught behind) as Ellie Anderson twice found the edge of the bat.<\/p>\n

Georgia Elwiss fell to a leaping, one-handed catch at fine leg as Somerset\u2019s spinners kept a tight rein on the scoring rate but at 95 for three at the halfway point, The Blaze were on course.<\/p>\n

The loss of Beaumont at 105 for four in the 27th over raised Somerset\u2019s hopes, the former England international departing as Jess Hazell, diving forward, made a superb one-handed grab at deep mid-wicket.<\/p>\n

But Sarah Bryce and Jones then took charge, consistently rotating the strike and judging the right moments to be aggressive. Bryce completed a half-century off 62 balls with three fours, Jones getting there from just 43 balls with seven fours.<\/p>\n

After the match, Somerset Head Coach, Erin Osborne said: \u201cWe just got outplayed by a quality team. I think the batting conditions were a little bit tricky, with some variable bounce, and we found it really tough, especially early on. Niamh Holland was really unlucky with one that didn\u2019t get up at all, and Emma Corney gloved one to the keeper. So that played a little bit of a role, but not to take away from the Blaze \u2013 they were exceptional and they bowled really well today.<\/p>\n

\u201cSophie Luff fought her way through that really well and got going. It was just disappointing when she got out. At the end of the day we were probably 50, 60 runs short of where we needed to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re still in with a chance. We\u2019ve got two tough games coming up against Lancashire and Surrey and we\u2019re going to have to be at our best to beat those teams to have a chance of playing in the elimination final. It\u2019s been a roller coaster of a year, but hopefully we\u2019ll finish off with a bang.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve played some really good cricket at times and we haven\u2019t been at our best for long enough in some other games. So I think it\u2019s a fair reflection of where we\u2019re at as a really young team. We\u2019re still learning a lot, we\u2019re still developing. Their ceiling is so high. So I\u2019m really looking forward to working with them and developing them and hopefully building towards something that will be a successful team for a long time to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
