That was until I spoke to Mark Peters.<\/p>\n<p>Peters is a Tai Chi and qigong expert based in the UK who has taught many health and fitness professionals how to apply these practices as rehabilitative tools.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-05450a3c-a6b2-11f1-af0a-91c908aa05d7-2\">He explained that Tai Chi is fundamentally a martial art, underpinned by mindful movement, breathwork and a complex system of biomechanics.<\/p>\n<p>Latest Videos FromFit&amp;Well<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that most people\u2014including myself\u2014don\u2019t think about what their bodies are doing when they\u2019re still or moving.<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate his point, he had me try rising onto my toes in two different ways: first by simply lifting my heels and then by imagining I was pushing the floor away with my toes.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you think about pushing down, although you&#8217;re still lifting your body, your brain tends to think more towards your feet and it often feels more stable,\u201d Peters explains.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed the difference. Lower your center <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-05450b90-a6b2-11f1-8109-915a1f955d0b\">\u201cWhere attention goes, energy flows,\u201d says Peters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people think of themselves, they imagine themselves in their head and their center shifts up,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt puts you slightly off balance.
