href=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1589306661079-8b34ef390d3e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">giraffe<\/a> facing right, with neck stretched high and long legs mid-stride (but some may see a <a href=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1687704809145-c37b3c3362e2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">squirrel<\/a> instead).<\/p>\n<p>    The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXy4r1OjWD8\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">featured image<\/a> shows <a href=\"https:\/\/in-the-sky.org\/data\/object.php?id=LDN_1295\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LDN 1295<\/a>, also called the Giraffe Nebula, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/iauarchive.eso.org\/public\/themes\/constellations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation<\/a> of the mythical queen of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aethiopia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aethiopia<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/education\/constellations\/cassiopeia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cassiopeia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>    It is an object in the <a href=\"https:\/\/in-the-sky.org\/data\/catalogue.php?cat=LDN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lynds Catalogue<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.swin.edu.au\/cosmos\/*\/Dark+Nebula\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dark Nebulas<\/a>, compiled in <a href=\"https:\/\/articles.adsabs.harvard.edu\/pdf\/1962ApJS....7....1L\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1962<\/a> by American astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/skyandtelescope.org\/astronomy-news\/beverly-turner-lynds-1929-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beverly Lynds<\/a>, a pioneer for women in astronomy and astrophysics.<\/p>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap251210.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dark nebulas<\/a> are interstellar <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap260731.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clouds of dust and gas<\/a> that block the visible light of the stars <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap141120.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">behind them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>    These <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/stories\/quick-reads\/decoding-nebulae\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nebulas<\/a> are often faint and challenging targets for astrophotographers.<\/p>\n<p>    Why do we see animal shapes and faces in nebulas, clouds, and pretty much <a href=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1640382875981-72c2ea943022\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">everywhere<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>    It is due to <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/magazine\/2024\/winter\/pareidolia-faces-in-nature\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pareidolia<\/a>, our tendency to look for <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap210704.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">familiar patterns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>    Pareidolia may provide animals with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-026-47242-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evolutionary advantage<\/a>, for example in
