{"id":766188,"date":"2026-09-10T13:34:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T13:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/766188\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T13:34:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T13:34:20","slug":"hse-apologises-to-graduate-nurses-offered-jobs-at-cork-university-hospital-in-error-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/766188\/","title":{"rendered":"HSE apologises to graduate nurses offered jobs at Cork University Hospital \u2018in error\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\">HSE<\/a> has apologised to a number of graduate nurses in the southwest who were offered jobs at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork-university-hospital\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork-university-hospital\/\">Cork University Hospital<\/a> (CUH) \u201cin error\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nurses who are due to graduate this week, and who have been working at the Cork hospital, received an email last month confirming they had been offered jobs as staff nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, these individuals were called into a meeting on Tuesday, during which they were told these job offers were no longer valid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokeswoman for the HSE South West region, under which CUH operates, said \u201cregrettably, CUH made offers to a number of students in error, and HSE South West apologises to those involved for the impact of this error on their immediate plans\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spokeswoman said the region would be recruiting all nursing graduates from University College Cork (UCC) and Munster Technological University who seek full-time positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cGraduates will be offered employment in sites across the integrated healthcare areas in Cork and Kerry,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cGraduates who have not been offered a full-time contract in CUH, but who wish to work in CUH as opposed to another site, may do so under the HSE South West\u2019s new staff bank initiative, which is an agency reduction measure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added that graduates working \u201cthrough the staff bank\u201d will be provided with a permanent full-time contract and will work across the hospital \u201cin areas where there are temporary vacancies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/08\/20\/cuh-crisis-shows-state-is-at-difficult-crossroads-on-healthcare-funding\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CUH crisis shows State is at difficult crossroads on healthcare fundingOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs funded permanent vacancies arise, the graduates will be facilitated to transfer into the positions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE South West is one of three health regions that was placed under what is known as \u201ctier three escalation\u201d at the end of April. Increased spending controls are in place in regions under this status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tensions have emerged in recent weeks between CUH and the national HSE office, with the hospital\u2019s chief executive, Jennifer Kearney, warning that delays in approving posts and restrictions on recruitment were resulting in increased patient safety risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI do not believe that the current position is sustainable, nor do I believe it is safe to enter the winter period with the level of staffing uncertainty that currently exists,\u201d Kearney told the HSE in a letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has criticised the region for failing to stay within its allocated budget, having hired 760 people in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOther regions have not hired in the same way. In many cases, it\u2019s half of that. It\u2019s really important that everybody understands that you can\u2019t take from other parts of the country,\u201d she said last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/08\/19\/cork-university-hospital-short-more-than-1000-staff-says-chief-executive\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cork University Hospital short more than 1,000 staff, says chief executiveOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ralph Brennan, student and new graduate officer at the Irish Nurses and Midwives\u2019 Organisation (INMO), said graduate posts must be protected \u201cdespite the staffing measures introduced as part of cost-control measures currently in place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEarly-career nurses and midwives should be offered roles in areas where they can expand their practise and build on the skills they have already gained through their four-year undergraduate training,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe INMO is calling on the HSE to provide clarity across all HSE regions regarding permanent posts for new graduates.
