{"id":766826,"date":"2026-09-11T03:06:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T03:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/766826\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T03:06:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T03:06:15","slug":"nhs-reports-busiest-ever-summer-as-heatwaves-drive-up-hospital-admissions-nhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/766826\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS reports busiest ever summer as heatwaves drive up hospital admissions | NHS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/nhs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS<\/a> came under its most intense strain ever as a result of the summer\u2019s five heatwaves, amid warnings that extreme heat is having an unprecedented impact on human health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A&amp;E units, ambulance services and the NHS 111 telephone advice line all experienced record demand for their services in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/england\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> in June, July and August as Britain experienced record temperatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">NHS England\u2019s latest performance statistics, published on Thursday, prompted claims that the growing climate emergency has left the NHS with a \u201ctwin crisis\u201d as it struggles to meet patients\u2019 need for care in the summer as well as winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cExtreme heat is now an NHS pressure point, not just a weather story,\u201d said Sarah Woolnough, the chief executive of the King\u2019s Fund health thinktank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe NHS is now facing a twin crisis, with summer joining winter as a major pressure on services and leaving little room for staff and the system to recover between peak periods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cOne major factor is climate change. As its effects become more pronounced and record-breaking heatwaves become more frequent, the impacts on people\u2019s health and our health system are becoming more obvious,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Almost 7.3 million people attended A&amp;E units in England in June, July and August \u2013 the highest number ever seen in the summer. The total of 7,268,445 attendances was 240,000 more than the 7,027,384 who attended in the same months in 2025, NHS England said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Almost a million more people sought help at A&amp;E this summer than in the same period in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It was a similar picture with other key NHS services. There was also a record number of ambulance callouts this summer \u2013 2.46m, up from 2.32m in the same period last year. And NHS 111 answered just over 3m calls over the summer months \u2013 more than 100,000 up year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cDespite a scorching summer which has tested the NHS like never before and seen demand rocket to record levels, staff have risen magnificently to the challenge to deliver for patients\u201d, said Prof Frankie Swords, NHS England\u2019s national medical director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Yvette Cooper, the health secretary, acknowledged the new challenge that very high temperatures were posing for the NHS, when she said that \u201cthe reality is that extreme demand is no longer confined to winter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">She announced that \u00a31.5bn of NHS funding would be used to give hospitals extra capacity through the construction of new operating theatres, children\u2019s wards and improved maternity units, as well as measures to \u201cheat-proof\u201d the NHS. Many hospitals struggled to maintain normal care this summer during the heatwaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cAugust was the world\u2019s joint hottest month on record and the health impact is clear to see in hospitals across the country,\u201d said Andrew McCracken, the director of external affairs at the charity Asthma + Lung UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cBreathing issues are already the leading cause of emergency admissions in England and it\u2019s likely that this summer increase is in part being driven by respiratory problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cAs temperatures rise it becomes harder to breathe.
