Parents and carers across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are being urged to check their child\u2019s asthma plan, inhaler technique and medication ahead of the annual \u2018September spike\u2019, when asthma attacks increase as children return to school following the summer holidays.<\/p>\n

Asthma affects around 24,250 children and young people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, around 9.1% of the child population, and is one of the leading causes of emergency hospital admissions among this group.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n

The rate of emergency department attendances for asthma in children increased by 229% in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire between August and September 2025, reflecting a significant increase in attacks and worsening symptoms often seen at the start of the new school term.<\/p>\n

This reminder comes as NHS organisations support the annual \u2018Ask About Asthma\u2019 campaign, which takes place from 7\u201311 September, with a focus on improving children and young people\u2019s respiratory care.<\/p>\n

Dr Dave Briggs, Executive Director of Outcomes, said: \u201cAsthma is one of the most common long-term conditions affecting children and young people, but with the right support it can be managed effectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsk About Asthma Week is an important reminder for families, schools and healthcare professionals to work together to help children stay well, active and confident in managing their condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimple actions such as having an asthma action plan, using inhalers correctly and attending regular asthma reviews can make a significant difference and help prevent serious asthma attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI encourage everyone to take a moment to learn about the \u2018Four Asks\u2019 of the campaign and the role we can all play in helping children and young people breathe easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, NHS organisations, schools and community partners across the country will be promoting the Four Asks and encouraging conversations about asthma:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Get an asthma action plan in place
\u2013 Make sure inhalers are used correctly
\u2013 Book an annual asthma review and a review after every asthma attack
\u2013 Consider air quality and its impact on lung health<\/p>\n

The campaign highlights the importance of supporting asthma management not only at home but also in schools, colleges and wider community settings.<\/p>\n
