(Photo by Malcolm Couzens\/Getty Images) <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"expand\" src=\"https:\/\/eu-cdn.rugbypass.com\/images\/common-svg\/select-arrow.svg\" height=\"6\" width=\"11\"\/>      <a href=\"https:\/\/google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rugbypass.com%2F\" onclick=\"GATracking.sendDataLayerEvent(&#039;preferredsourcegoogle&#039;);\" aria-label=\"Google Prefered Source\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1789150933_412_google_preferred_source_badge_light.png\" alt=\"Google Prefered Source\" width=\"141\" height=\"44\" class=\"google-source\"\/> <\/a>     <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/leicester\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leicester<\/a> Tigers are keen to tie down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/england\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> lock Ollie Chessum to a new long-term contract and keep him at Welford Road after he entered the final year of his contract at the start of July.<\/p>\n<p>Club captain Chessum is highly rated by Tigers boss Geoff Parling and is likely to draw serious interest from Gallagher PREM rivals, with his stock rising since he signed his last contract in December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Tigers will be delighted if they can avoid a repeat of losing another international enforcer, George Martin, who joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/saracens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saracens<\/a> when his Welford Road deal ran out at the end of last season.<\/p>\n<p>Dan McFarland admits that renewing his working relationship with Gregor Townsend was a key factor in his decision to link up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/newcastle\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle<\/a> Red <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/bulls\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bulls<\/a> in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>McFarland knows Townsend, who has a part-time role as a \u201cstrategic advisor\u201d to the Austrian-owned energy drinks giant, from their time together north of the border with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/glasgow\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glasgow<\/a> Warriors and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/scotland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scotland<\/a> national side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHim (Townsend) being here and consulting and being able to help in terms of guidance was a major attraction for me in joining the club. I really respect Gregor\u2019s way of playing the game. It\u2019s very important to me that I chat to him on a regular basis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/new-zealand\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Blacks<\/a> tighthead Jeffery Toomaga-Allen appeared to be off on his travels once again and was in advanced talks of an injury-joker move to Bordeaux-B\u00e8gles but pulled the plug at the last minute.<\/p>\n<p>Toomaga-Allen, 35, who earned his only All Blacks cap against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/japan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a> in November 2013, has since switched his international allegiance to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/samoa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samoa<\/a> and spent the last three seasons with the Queensland Reds.<\/p>\n<p>The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/wasps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wasps<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/ulster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ulster<\/a> ace sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/bordeaux\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bordeaux<\/a> back to the drawing board when he decided against a move to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/france\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a> because of personal reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Quins boss Jason Gilmore has launched a double raid on London Scottish for flanker Jake Spurway and tighthead Osman Dimen to strengthen his squad for the PREM Rugby Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Former Scotland under-20 international Spurway is due to start against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/northampton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northampton<\/a> Saints at blindside, while Dimen, who has played for Bourgoin-Jallieu and Chamb\u00e9ry in the French third tier, will be on the bench after spending pre-season with the club.<\/p>\n<p>Gilmore drafted in Royal Artillery and British Army tighthead Sitiveni Vasuturaga last week and he will make his first start against Saints at the Stoop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2254986472.jpg.webp\"  class=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jack Nowell\" width=\"766\" height=\"395\"\/>Jack Nowell of La Rochelle during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/european-champions-cup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Investec Champions Cup<\/a> match between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/leinster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leinster<\/a> and La Rochelle at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. (Photo By Seb Daly\/Sportsfile via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>La Rochelle who have got former England and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/golden-lions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lions<\/a> star Jack Nowell out of contract at the end of the season, are keen on a move for Pau\u2019s former France under-20 and A international Gr\u00e9goire Arfeuil.<\/p>\n<p>Arfeuil, 21, scored 11 tries in 20 appearances for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/pau\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pau<\/a> and is in the final year of his deal; talks to get him to sign a new one recently broke down without an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>But Ronan O\u2019Gara faces stiff competition from Racing 92, Stade Fran\u00e7ais, and Montpellier, all of whom are interested in speaking to Arfeuil, who was born in Beaune, between Lyon, who are also keen, and Dijon.<\/p>\n<p>Former Scotland and Lions star Richie Gray is taking his first steps into coaching after joining the staff of former club Toyota Verblitz, where he ended his long playing career.<\/p>\n<p>Gray, 37, who won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/top-14\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Top 14<\/a> title with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/toulouse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toulouse<\/a> in 2019 and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/united-rugby-championship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Rugby Championship<\/a> crown with Glasgow two years ago, won 77 caps for his country and another for the Lions.<\/p>\n<p>He played 13 times for Verblitz and has joined Andrew Strawbridge, Sasaki Takamichi, Ueno Ryuta and Sugimoto Koichi on Ian Foster\u2019s staff when the players report back for pre-season training.<\/p>\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/edinburgh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh<\/a> scrum-half Charlie Shiel could move to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/pro-d2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pro D2<\/a> high-flyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/biarritz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Biarritz<\/a> Olympique, who have started the season with two wins out of three games and are third in the early-season table.<\/p>\n<p>Shiel, 28, has made 107 appearances for the Scottish capital club, but Biarritz, who beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/colomiers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colomiers<\/a> 38-20 on Thursday evening, are in the market for an injury joker to cover for Anoa Laurent.<\/p>\n<p>Midi Olympique are also reporting that Shiels\u2019 CV has also been sent to Bayonne, who are also in the market for a scrum-half to bolster their squad this season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/bath\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bath<\/a> look set to move for young Argentine front row Marcos Camerrinckx, who has played for his country at under-20 level at both tighthead and hooker.<\/p>\n<p>X account Comentarista.
