Hammer Horror is getting back into the monster business, and it’s bringing something new to the table.

Fourteen years in the making, Ithaqua is finally headed our way, with Hammer Films releasing the official trailer for its upcoming folk horror movie. You also might be interesting in learning that he creature at the center of the film marks Hammer’s first original new monster in more than 60 years.

That’s a pretty cool way to kick off a new era for the legendary horror studio. Now under the ownership of British theater producer John Gore, Hammer Films is building a fresh slate of movies intended to “celebrate and preserve the unmatched legacy of Hammer and to usher in a new era of storytelling.”

Ithaqua will lead that charge when it arrives in early 2027.

The movie takes audiences into the unforgiving Canadian wilderness during the 1800s, where the people stationed at an isolated fur-trading outpost discover that freezing temperatures aren’t the biggest threat waiting for them.

Hammer’s official synopsis reads: “A remote 1800s fur-trade outpost is plagued by an ancient evil with an insatiable hunger for flesh. The cold is the least of anyone’s problems.”

That’s a strong and exciting premise for a Hammer monster movie. Snow, isolation, starvation, an ancient flesh-eating creature and nowhere to run sounds like a nasty combination.

Casey Walker directs the film, with Luke Hemsworth, Leenah Robinson, Kevin Durand, Craig Lauzon and Michael Pitt leading the cast.

Hammer describes Ithaqua as a “haunting folk horror experience where isolation, hunger and myth collide.” The studio is also making some big promises about what horror fans can expect, teasing: “This is horror as it was meant to be: terrifying and utterly unforgettable,”

There’s plenty of history riding on Hammer’s comeback. Hammer Film Productions helped shape the identity of cinematic horror with its memorable versions of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and other classic monsters. Those films also turned Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing into two of the genre’s most enduring icons.

Rather than simply reaching back into that familiar monster catalog, Ithaqua gives Hammer the opportunity to create something of its own for a new generation of horror fans.

If the movie can capture some of that classic Hammer atmosphere while giving audiences a monster worth remembering, this could be a fun start for the studio’s next chapter.

Ithaqua is currently scheduled for release in early 2027.
