In fact, Xia has discovered almost everything in the bustling city can be arranged for one.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900033b6r00z1yj0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Groceries and meals for one are delivered straight to her door. Her late ragdoll cat Mocha was a steadfast emotional companion, waking her in the mornings and greeting her when she came home from work. If she wanted to get something off her chest, she could also turn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/23\/business\/china-ai-companion-ban-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI chatbots<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900043b6rpdnrh8fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s super convenient right now for people to live alone,\u201d she said. \u201cMost things I can think of, I\u2019ve had the experience of doing on my own.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900053b6rgb8biexk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Xia is part of a growing cohort fast reshaping the profile of the Asian consumer: people who are single, childless or otherwise living alone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900063b6rhxs98o8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The traditional metrics of success in many Asian nations \u2013 marriage, children and home ownership \u2013 have lost their appeal among younger generations, as costs of housing and education have risen and social expectations have changed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900073b6rnjxu0mv2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Across the region, birth rates are falling to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/19\/world\/video\/china-birth-rate-lowest-record-vrtc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record lows<\/a>. Governments are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/06\/asia\/south-korea-population-fertility-rate-intl-hnk-dst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dangling cash<\/a> and subsidies to encourage couples to have children to shore up future workforces, with little success.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900083b6rp30ghkfw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the problem comes with an economic silver lining: even as populations shrink, consumers living alone are spending more on themselves.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5900093b6rmnlfgvqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rise of single-person households in countries like Japan, South Korea and China is creating what\u2019s been dubbed the \u201cloneliness economy\u201d or \u201csolo economy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni59000a3b6ruw2dzcwz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead of buying diapers or bulk groceries, individuals are splurging on pets, collectible toys and new experiences. Businesses have noticed, and are cashing in by helping them build a world for one.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni59000b3b6rw683aiqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey have really high fixed costs. They don\u2019t have a partner or other family members to share this,\u201d said Ming-Hsuan Lee, a professor at the National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, who has researched spending patterns of single consumers in Asia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni59000c3b6r0v8zjs9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut on the other hand, we find single people like to invest in themselves. They show higher expenditures in travel and dining out, and personal improvement, like education or leisure.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni59000d3b6rbri41jqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While doing things alone often means paying more, Xia enjoys the freedom to follow her own schedule and preferences.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000e3b6ra5q0n5t9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It wasn\u2019t until her cat died last year that she began to question whether she could remain single forever.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000f3b6r890rcakf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt made me question more about what kind of life I\u2019m looking for,\u201d she said. \u201cAm I really okay to live this isolated kind of life for the rest of my life?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2283644490.jpg\" alt=\"A woman shops solo at a Barbie pop-up shop in Shanghai, China, on July 1, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000h3b6r05mbp2ja@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In China, which recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/07\/india\/india-census-population-explainer-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost its title<\/a> as the world\u2019s most populous nation to India, the solo economy is thriving.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000i3b6rrkmcm8zp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Miniature karaoke kiosks the size of old-school phone booths have popped up around the country to cater to lone crooners. Single travelers can hire hiking partners, sightseeing companions or personal photographers at tourist destinations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000j3b6r3sbg6nfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chinese research firm Discovery Reports estimates the singles economy reached more than $1 trillion in China in 2025, an increase of about 50% when compared with 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000k3b6rhab4grcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consumer analysts say singles are also spending more on video games, AI companions and micro-dramas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/22\/style\/short-drama-ai-china-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">soap opera-like shows<\/a> with episodes under two minutes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000l3b6rjl4ug9r5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you\u2019re back home from work and it\u2019s 10 p.m. and you\u2019ve already eaten, if you had a husband or wife, you would talk to them,\u201d said Ashley Dudarenok, founder of China market consultancy ChoZan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000m3b6r4n1kqmqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf that companionship is missing, you are left with subscriptions to games, to streaming, and that is a huge, huge trend that is reshaping the way people entertain themselves.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000n3b6rwrww82gz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dudarenok said that China\u2019s vast and competitive consumer market could accelerate the development of products and services for people living alone and eventually export them to the rest of the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000o3b6ry9q07vbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI companions and micro-dramas have already gained traction in the US. Companies there are also increasingly courting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/solo-dining-global-popularity-rising\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solo diners<\/a>. Domino\u2019s Pizza announced recently it would begin offering small rectangular pies designed for one.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000p3b6re42n3z16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previously, businesses and governments typically treated singledom as a temporary stage before marriage, Dudarenok points out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000q3b6rjp1drw27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need to start thinking about single living and this new economic model as something that is here to stay,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2285365469.jpg\" alt=\"A man dining by himself feeds a dog inside a restaurant in Hong Kong, China, on July 9.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000s3b6reqwfb177@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rather than marketing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/23\/health\/loneliness-influencers-going-viral-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lonely souls<\/a>, brands have chosen to emphasize independence over isolation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000t3b6r0913r7jt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of messaging about empowerment and individuality,\u201d said Allison Malmsten, marketing director at Daxue Consulting, a China-focused research firm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000u3b6rwsijstk1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat is more likely to resonate with consumers, because they don\u2019t want to see themselves as lonely. They see themselves as still being very social and having very fulfilling life experiences.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000v3b6rzvddzkus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, concerns are mounting in the region over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/15\/health\/who-loneliness-social-connection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effects of loneliness<\/a> on people\u2019s health. Both Japan and South Korea have struggled to tackle their comparatively high suicide rates across generations, sparking soul-searching, debate and policies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt810hov000a3b6rn9yi2292@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Seoul, authorities have allocated millions of dollars to provide counseling, social activities and other services to alleviate alienation. In 2021, Japan appointed a Minister of Loneliness and Isolation to address the impact on people\u2019s mental health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000w3b6ray7ykh1b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For some, pets have become a way to fill an emotional void.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000x3b6rye56lidq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Singles are increasingly traveling with their pets or buying them luxury gifts, said Malmsten. In 2017, Chinese households had twice as many toddlers as pets, she added, but by 2030 that ratio is expected to reverse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000y3b6rtc5t3jf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ellen Xie, a 35-year-old live comedy producer, said her lifestyle as a single \u201ccat lady\u201d is commonplace among her circle in Shanghai. Nearly all her single friends have cats, she said, and one has a dog. None like to cook, so when they catch up, they order their own meals and ponder what their lives will look like as they grow older.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a000z3b6r7rsdrp9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some still want to get married; others don\u2019t. For now, Xie is content with her two cats. Being unattached also makes it easier to take impromptu trips, like when she flew to Japan on a whim in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a00103b6rzk8kahji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSometimes I go to a new country or a new place, and I would just say, wow, I\u2019m glad I\u2019m not married,\u201d she said. \u201cThose kinds of experiences are kind of special and also can maybe only be done when I\u2019m single.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2290266192.jpg\" alt=\"Men dine alone at the Shancheng Memory Underground City Community Canteen in Chongqing, China, on August 13, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a00123b6rpay66bs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Xie and her friends do harbor some reservations about retirement, given another consequence of the demographic change: the growing number of elderly could outnumber younger populations in the coming decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a00133b6rrsdr26jo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chinese state media estimates the country\u2019s \u201csilver economy,\u201d or products and services for senior citizens, will reach more than $4 trillion by 2035 as the market tailors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/13\/china\/china-population-robots-intl-hnk-dst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new technology<\/a> to accompany and care for older generations. A daily check-in app for people living alone went viral earlier this year, in part for its bleak name: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/14\/china\/china-viral-app-are-you-dead-yet-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Are You Dead?<\/a>\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5a00143b6rzslkgkdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traditionally, multiple generations of Chinese families have lived together, and part of the motivation for having children has been to ensure elders are cared for in old age. But Xie trusts that in the future, \u201cold ladies\u201d like her will have more options to cohabitate and live economically.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5b00153b6riq58unnc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe can maybe form temporary families together,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause of demand, as long as our population grows bigger, some company will want to make money out of this.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5b00163b6rpuoec9q5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Xiao Hanyu, a graduate student in the southern city of Shenzhen, is still afraid of growing old alone. But he said new services and technology have enabled him to stay single for longer than he might have otherwise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt0xni5b00173b6r8ooz72x4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An abundance of youth hostels allow him to travel affordably by himself and single-player games fill the hours between his studies.
