\n\tPink<\/a> addressed the backlash she received after she shared an Instagram post that criticized Macklemore<\/a>\u2018s calls to \u201cfree Palestine\u201d during an opening performance on Ed Sheeran\u2019s North American tour.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast week, Macklemore took to the stage at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The rapper addressed<\/a> the thousands in the crowd. \u201cA big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine,\u201d Macklemore said. \u201cI want those words to be loud and clear, so that people all the way in Gaza to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten about them.\u201d His speech was met with cheers from the crowd while others reportedly walked out during his performance.<\/p>\n

\n\tMacklemore was met with swift calls to have him removed from the tour. In one post, which Pink reshared on Instagram, the StopAntisemitism\u00a0account accused Macklemore of ambushing fans at Sheeran\u2019s concert with \u201canti-Israel propaganda\u201d and said the artist had \u201caccused Israel of a false \u2018genocide.’\u201d Per Stereogum<\/a>, the post called for Macklemore to issue an apology and for ticketholders to be refunded.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn turn, Pink received backlash following her repost. Pink responded to the criticism on Friday (Sept. 11) with a lengthy explanation on social media<\/a> on why she felt compelled to share the post calling for Macklemore to apologize and why his actions last week alarmed her.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLast Sunday I reposted somebody else\u2019s post about Macklemore\u2019s set at Ed Sheeran\u2019s show. It said things in words I didn\u2019t write, and I wouldn\u2019t have chosen all of them. Then the comments came, and I did what I do when I\u2019m hurt, which is post snarky memes and act like I\u2019m fine. That\u2019s on me,\u201d wrote Pink. \u201cA repost isn\u2019t a statement, and a meme isn\u2019t a spine. Social media makes all of us cheap and fast, and we all know it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe continued, \u201cI was born a Jew. I didn\u2019t pick it, and I\u2019ve never hidden it. And this week a whole lot of people decided what I believe without asking me, without checking a single thing I\u2019ve ever said or done, because a repost and the word \u2018Jew\u2019 were apparently enough to fill in the rest.\u201d Pink said that she has never spoken for \u201cIsrael, or for any government\u201d and that she still believes \u201cHamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations. Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody\u2019s child.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe singer pointed to her \u201cdecade as a UNICEF ambassador for kids who didn\u2019t choose the country or the war they were born into\u201d and that she \u201cdidn\u2019t do it from behind a screen; I went to those children and held them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer three-part statement continued into the comment section of her post. Pink explained that her feelings about Macklemore have changed throughout his career from when he performed \u201cSame Love<\/a>\u201d at the 2014 Grammys and 33 couples married on air to when months later, he performed in a costume that was widely interpreted as a a Jewish caricature. (Macklemore later apologized<\/a> to those offended by the costume, which many\u00a0said was antisemitic<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI let it go, because that\u2019s what we do. We let it go,\u201d wrote Pink. \u201cThen last weekend he stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn\u2019t about them. You don\u2019t get to decide that for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPink continued, \u201cThat\u2019s what prompted my repost. Not \u2018Free Palestine,\u2019 and not anyone\u2019s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I\u2019m not asking now. I don\u2019t need anyone fired, and I don\u2019t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, \u2018that scared me, and it scared people I love,\u2019 without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I\u2019m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPink directly addressed the \u201cones who are furious with me\u201d and said, \u201cyou don\u2019t have to agree with me.\u201d \u201cTo the ones who are frightened this week, Jewish or Muslim or Palestinian or Israeli or just tired of all of it: I see you,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAnd if anybody wants to really know what I think, just ask me. I\u2019m right here. I\u2019ve never been hard to find. And I\u2019ll keep speaking out, in my own words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPink ended her message by recognizing that it was the 25th anniversary of September 11th, and that \u201cat sundown, for Jews, it\u2019s Rosh Hashanah, our New Year,\u201d before signing off, \u201cShana tova.\u201d <\/p>\n

My message is for peace; love for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality \u2026 So I say free Palestine, I say free Lebanon, I say free Cuba, I say free Congo, free Sudan, I say free all people in America living in fear of this terrorist organization, ICE. None of us will be free until we are all free.\u201d<\/p>\n
