{"id":768657,"date":"2026-09-12T20:18:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T20:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/768657\/"},"modified":"2026-09-12T20:18:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T20:18:10","slug":"do-not-swim-warning-at-devon-beach-as-stream-turns-bright-blue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/768657\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Do not swim&#8217; warning at Devon beach as stream turns bright blue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time it&#8217;s not sewage related<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Littleham Brook in Exmouth\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1_MS_DCP_12_09_26_Exmouthjfif.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Littleham Brook in Exmouth\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Littleham Brook in Exmouth(Image: Environment Agency )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A small stream in Devon has been turned bright blue following a pollution incident yesterday (Friday, September 11).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Littleham Brook in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/all-about\/exmouth\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Exmouth<\/a> has turned bright blue because of the pollution and people are encouraged to stay out of the water until the substance is identified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Environment Agency (EA) said there are no &#8220;visible environmental impacts&#8221; caused by the pollution but as a precaution, there is <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/environment.data.gov.uk\/bwq\/profiles\/profile.html?site=ukk4301-22300\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">advice against bathing <\/a>at Exmouth beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Last night, the source of the blue pollution was traced to an &#8220;industrial source&#8221; but it has since stopped leaking into the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">There was<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/news\/devon-news\/south-west-water-apologises-after-11153008\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\"> an earlier sewage spill this week near Exmouth&#8217;s bathing waters<\/a>, but the EA has confirmed this latest substance is not linked to the sewage network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The more recent incident was reported to have started yesterday evening (Friday, September 11) at 8.33pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The EA added it is waiting for toxicity information on the substance and will lift the pollution warning when it is safe to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesperson advised via X: &#8220;A bright blue substance was reported in Littleham Brook, Exmouth. We attended and found no visible environmental impacts, but issued an advice against bathing as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Overnight it was traced to an industrial source, but it has stopped. It is not linked to the sewage network. The pollutant is still moving downstream and is likely to reach the bathing water this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;We\u2019re awaiting toxicity information, so the advice against bathing on Swimfo remains.
