The government wants to hear from you\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wildlife officials are urging Floridians to report sightings of the rare rainbow snake, a nonvenomous species whose population has declined in recent decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Known for their striking iridescent black or violet-blue bodies with bright red stripes, rainbow snakes are semi-aquatic reptiles that primarily feed on American eels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts say declining<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-11508045\/Rare-rainbow-snake-swallow-long-slimy-eel-Georgia-wildlife-video.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> eel populations and habitat loss <\/a>have contributed to the species&#8217; dwindling numbers across\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/florida\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f2b46960-7c6b-11f0-ac12-01a7189d4e4f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Florida<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We need help from Floridians and visitors to better understand where rainbow snakes still occur in the state,&#8217; said Kevin Enge, research scientist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Every sighting report gives us valuable data about their current distribution and helps us assess the health of the species in Florida.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-8043241\/Rare-four-foot-rainbow-snake-spotted-Florida-time-50-years.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rainbow snakes are typically found near rivers,<\/a> springs, and brackish marshes.
