The National Crime Agency (NCA) has exposed an “evil” tactic used by smuggling gangs to tempt migrants across the Channel. <\/p>\n

People smugglers are using “coded language” on TikTok to lure migrants to make the perilous crossing. <\/p>\n

Online accounts are using artificial intelligence-generated images of lions, emojis of \u201cninjas\u201d, Union Flags or boats and planes, to avoid detection from officers.<\/p>\n

Now, a leading NCA investigator has said the videos aim to tempt those desperate enough to make the dangerous journey “for almost all migrants arriving” in Britain. <\/p>\n

One video shows a suspected Albanian people smuggler next to a scenic lake wearing a balaclava, with three child-sized dinghies behind him.<\/p>\n

Soundtracked by an Albanian rap song, he tells the camera: “Are you bored with this life? Grab a boat and get out on the sea.”<\/p>\n

The account was deleted after it was flagged to TikTok, reports The i Paper. <\/p>\n

In the first half of the year, TikTok removed 17,000 posts and accounts for advertising crossings, at least 10,000 of which originated within the UK<\/p>\n

There has been an increase in so-called ‘mega dinghies’<\/p>\n

However, despite officials cracking down on the videos, the ads remain on the site, as smugglers encourage more people to come to Britain on “mega dinghies” that can carry up to 230 people across at one time.<\/p>\n

Other videos posted said they were offering a “Route to England by dinghy”, while others offered the opportunity to make the dangerous crossing at the price of \u201c30,000 lek (\u00a3275)”.<\/p>\n

Minister for border security and asylum Anna Turley told The i: “Videos encouraging people to make dangerous Channel crossings show the evil tactics used by smuggling gangs to line their own pockets.<\/p>\n

“Disrupting the criminal business models used by these gangs means cutting off their operations on all fronts, targeting both their online advertising as well as the illegal crossings that their videos promote.”<\/p>\n

On the TikTok videos, social media users are commenting warnings the videos may be reported. <\/p>\n

One comment read: “Thank God you\u2019re safe, but they said not to film while you\u2019re out at sea because it\u2019s against the rules. Don\u2019t film while you\u2019re out at sea…while another warns: “Don\u2019t upload videos like this.”<\/p>\n

Another commentor on a video appearing to show a Sundanese man crossing the channel said: “Don\u2019t upload these things on TikTok\u2026 it will end up on the BBC\u201d.<\/p>\n

TikTok has since removed these videos.<\/p>\n

Crime experts warned they were ‘very concerned’ at the developments on TikTok<\/p>\n

Mike Hulett, who leads the NCA\u2019s Threat Leadership team monitoring online organised immigration crime, said he was “very concerned” at how the platform was being used to exploit vulnerable people desperate to make the crossing.<\/p>\n

He said: “We\u2019ve gone from small boat crossings being few and far between in around 2018, to from 2021 onwards, an organised criminal business model.<\/p>\n

“Our strategy is to try and break that model, to make it harder for the criminals to get the equipment, get in touch with the potential migrants and arrange the crossings.<\/p>\n

“We can\u2019t pretend no material is going to be published [on social media] and nothing\u2019s going to get through. We have to work to make that as minimal as possible.”<\/p>\n

The National Crime Agency is cracking down on the videos<\/p>\n

Valiant Richey, TikTok\u2019s safety lead, warned people smuggling gangs are becoming wiser to the actions of the NCA.<\/p>\n

He said: “They are using coded language and subtle references because they know that we\u2019re trying to remove that content. <\/p>\n
