\n ‘Flora’ is the creation of artist Rory Macbeth, and has been displayed in Davygate recently, with many passersby mistaking her for a real-life busker.\n<\/p>\n
\n Other sculptures from the series are on permanent display in museums, including the ARoS Museum of Contemporary Art in Aarhus, Denmark.\n<\/p>\n

\n Rory Macbeth said: “Flora is almost universally seen as a person, despite the lack of breathing or movement.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Increasingly, as a result of social media coverage, there are people who recognise her, and know her to be a sculpture.”\n<\/p>\n
\n The artist said however that the vast majority of people who stop to look see her as a busker, but Mr Macbeth said he’s always nearby to reveal the truth behind the work and that Flora’s presence in public spaces serves a purpose beyond surprising passers-by.\n<\/p>\n
\n Rory Macbeth said: “An integral part of all these works is that people interact with them, often talking to them, and donating money to the collection basket.\n<\/p>\n
\n “This aspect of the work has been harnessed, and part of Flora’s role is to help raise funds and awareness of an experimental art school.\n<\/p>\n
\n “It’s called Ghost Art School and is a serious and necessary piece of educational and artistic research in a climate of institutional failure and crisis.\n<\/p>\n
\n “For it to be able to generate real knowledge and find ways forward, it needs to be genuinely independent of institutions and the structures that institutions have developed.”\n<\/p>\n

\n Macbeth created Flora as part of a series of waxwork ‘living sculptures’ between 2001 and 2004.\n<\/p>\n
\n Macbeth said Ghost Art School was set up as an experiment, “to question what is wrong and find new ways forward – it does not replicate the formal structures of traditional art schools, it does not want to repeat the problems.”\n<\/p>\n
\n The artist said Flora is a public face that provides a means for people to find out about the school and what is trying to do.\n<\/p>\n
\n Rory said: “On a practical level she has enabled multiple exhibitions, residencies, seminars and tutorials, all specially calibrated to create intensive moments of learning and development.”\n<\/p>\n
\n “A recent example of this is the ‘Art and Magic’ residency in Puglia, Italy, earlier this summer.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Flora’s fundraising efforts allowed 14 artists from around Europe to meet in an intensive 10-day residential learning experience.”\n<\/p>\n

\n Mr Macbeth said it now has over 300 members worldwide, including students, graduates, and art enthusiasts who have never had the opportunity to study art formally.\n<\/p>\n
\n Ghost Art School operates without a hierarchy, buildings, or a curriculum, he said, adding that the only official role is “caretaker” – a voluntary janitorial role currently held by Macbeth along with others.\n<\/p>\n
\n He said: “Curriculums are created to validate the institutions, not to help the students.\n<\/p>\n
\n “There are no age limits, nor any expectations about attendance or input – the more you input the more you get out – and no defined time-limits to belonging to the school, we are all always learning.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u00a0“The open remit to our approach means we can always stay relevant to what is happening, and be flexible enough to adapt quickly to change, which institutions are notoriously bad at.\n<\/p>\n
\n “It is a relevant and dynamic model that will only exist as long as there is a need for it – it exists because of its members and their needs, not because of a top-down instance that it is necessary.”\n<\/p>\n
