A sequel to the beloved 2005 Christmas movie The Family Stone<\/a> is officially in the works.<\/p>\n

Sarah Jessica Parker is among the many members of the original ensemble cast<\/a> confirmed to return for the new film, along with Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Brian White and Paul Schneider.<\/p>\n

One key member of the cast will be missing: the late Diane Keaton, who died last October at the age of 79<\/a>. The plot of the first film followed the family as they came to terms with her character Sybil\u2019s terminal diagnosis and eventual death.<\/p>\n

According to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, the new film\u2019s logline reads: \u201cTwenty years after their mother\u2019s passing, the Stone family reunites for Christmas only to face the season\u2019s biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he\u2019s fallen in love with to meet the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sequel will be written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, who was also the creative force behind the original film. <\/p>\n

\"RachelRachel McAdams, Diane Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker starred in \u2018The Family Stone\u2019 (Twentieth Century Fox)<\/p>\n

Bezucha said last year that he hopes to \u201chonor\u201d Keaton with the new film.<\/a><\/p>\n

In an interview with CNN<\/a>, Bezucha said he was already at work on the script for the sequel when he learned that Keaton had died.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,\u201d he said. \u201cMentally, I\u2019ve been spending time in that house where I\u2019ve been missing her for a while already.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bezucha added that Keaton\u2019s death had made him focus on doing \u201ca good job by the rest of the cast,\u201d and encouraged him to \u201chonor her even more.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Bezucha said he would only want to go ahead with the film if he could reunite the film\u2019s stars, joking: \u201cI\u2019m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2005 film performed well at the box office, making almost $93 million worldwide against a budget of $18 million, and has gone on to become a perennial festive favorite.<\/p>\n

However, it was not received well by all critics when it was originally released. In a scathing review for The Independent<\/a>, critic Anthony Quinn wrote: \u201cAs a tribute to touchy-feely family values, only Cameron Crowe’s recent Elizabethtown could top this for sheer falseness and vacuity.
