Fall movies are here, and Practical Magic 2<\/a>\u00a0cast the first spell of the season.<\/p>\n

Per Variety<\/a>, the legacyquel to the 1998 cult classic opened to $46 million worldwide. $30 million of that came from North America, whose love of top-billed stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman has kept them employed and in the public eye for a long time. For some comparison, Bullock\u2019s last theatrical movie as the lead was 2022\u2019s The Lost City, which opened to $30.5 million in its first weekend; Kidman\u2019s last, Babygirl\u00a0from late 2024, started with $7.3 million in a five-day period.<\/p>\n

Overseas, #PracticalMagic2<\/a> also underperformed, as the spooky comedy starring #SandraBullock<\/a> & #NicoleKidman<\/a> grossed 16M on 5-day opening (vs #WutheringHeights<\/a>\u2019s 42M, #ItEndsWithUS<\/a>\u2019s 30M, #TheLostCity<\/a>\u2019s 20.4M, #TheHousemaid<\/a>\u2019s 18.5M) over 77 intl. markets.<\/p>\n

The original\u00a0Practical Magic\u00a0was a cult classic that garnered a mixed reception, and the same\u2019s basically true of\u00a0Practical Magic 2. While it\u2019s opened on the low end of projection, the sequel has managed a rare feat this summer in knocking Spider-Man: Brand New Day\u00a0off its weekslong throne of #1 at the domestic box office. As is, the Spidey film\u2019s made $935 million, but it\u2019s believed that it\u2019ll gain more in the next few days\u2014and in turn, surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing movie in domestic history.<\/p>\n

Next up for September\u2019s genre movies, we\u2019ve got the long-debated\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0from Zach Cregger (September 18), then Dreamworks\u2019\u00a0<\/a>Forgotten Island<\/a>\u00a0(September 25), with\u00a0Other Mommy<\/a>\u00a0kicking off next month\u2019s slate (October 9).<\/p>\n
