Shane Lowry clarifies controversial comment after Irish Open victoryShane Lowry has addressed his controversial comment after winning the Irish Open in dominant fashion.The Offaly golfer sparked online criticism during the third round when television cameras caught him suggesting spectators “deserved to get hit” as his wayward tee shot flew towards them on the 18th hole.Lowry went on to claim victory at Doonbeg with a commanding 23-under-par finish, winning by eleven shots and ending a 17-year wait since his amateur triumph at Baltray.Speaking after his final round, Lowry explained the incident: “It’s funny, right, because marshals obviously have a very tough job and they are volunteers, but they get a little bit in the way at times, I feel like.”The golfer revealed the 18th tee had been causing him anxiety all week after hitting a practice shot 50 yards left out-of-bounds on Monday.”Even today, I had a 10-shot lead, and I was like, I just can’t wait to get this tee shot over and done with,” he admitted.Lowry described this year as “quite difficult on the course” but expressed disbelief at his commanding victory.<\/p>\n
