Paradoxically, though, as much as the media and his fans claimed to know him through his work, Cobain only felt less and less understood.

‘All Apologies’ reflects on those swirling, complex themes of fame and guilt, as the opening line demands, “What else should I be? All apologies”, at once a genuine plea for guidance and a snarky swipe at the outlandish expectations forced upon him. This, in Cobain’s eyes, was one of the staple tracks from the band, not just because of the moody, sensitive soul-searching in the lyrics, but, as he explained to Rolling Stone in 1994, “To put a jangly REM type of pop song on a grunge record, in that scene, was risky”.

The track, along with ‘Dumb’ also from In Utero, boasts a more melodic thoroughness than the hazy gloop of grunge fuzz of their other work, prickled with a punkish jabber and a rock and roll fire. In that way, though most other music lovers would never relate the word to the world of Nirvana, these two tracks were more ‘poppy’.

As his interviewer posed, ‘All Apologies’ and ‘Dumb’ represent Nirvana attempting to leave the “big-bang guitar effect” behind, the frontman assented, “Absolutely. I wish we could have written a few more songs like those on all the other albums. Even to put ‘About a Girl’ on Bleach was a risk. I was heavily into pop, I really liked REM, and I was into all kinds of old ’60s stuff. But there was a lot of pressure within that social scene, the underground, like the kind of thing you get in high school.”

Here we are, full circle, with Cobain gesturing to the great misunderstanding of the band, both informing, inspiring, and limiting the music.

Further reading: From The Vault

He went on, “We have failed in showing the lighter, more dynamic side of our band. The big guitar sound is what the kids want to hear. We like playing that stuff, but I don’t know how much longer I can scream at the top of my lungs every night, for an entire year on tour.”

That’s where Cobain was wrong: Nirvana never failed at showing how “light and dynamic” they could be. The clues were right in front of us, in the cello seeping through the ‘All Apologies’ verses, in the confessional and poetic musings, in the vocal harmonies. If that was the “risk”, then those tracks have certainly paid off.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

[28
32677,241106,96,6794,6795,128,6796,39122,67202,15183,56,54,55
post-771048","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1990s","tag-alt-pop","tag-entertainment","tag-grunge","tag-kurt-cobain","tag-music","tag-nirvana","tag-pop-culture","tag-rem","tag-seattle","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
