{"id":771228,"date":"2026-09-15T07:58:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T07:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/771228\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T07:58:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T07:58:15","slug":"championship-rugby-league-club-sued-for-200k","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/771228\/","title":{"rendered":"Championship rugby league club sued for \u00a3200k"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dance company Pro-Excel has launched legal action against Oldham RLFC and its ex-chairman Bill Quinn in the High Court over a cancelled performance at Boundary Park last year.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Excel is suing the Championship club and its former owner for breach of contract and for defamation, after an attempt to gain <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/world-record?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Guinness World Record<\/a> for the most number of dancers to perform with a singer, set to happen before an Oldham game in May 2025, was abruptly aborted.<\/p>\n<p>In April last year the Roughyeds claimed the decision had been made \u201cdue to the lack of required information by Pro-Excel\u201d, and directed ticket refunds back to the dance company.<\/p>\n<p>Around 2,500 child dancers, aged nine to 18, had been organised to perform at the event alongside English DJ and producer Sigala.<\/p>\n<p>A crowd of more than 10,000 was expected to attend the event at Boundary Park.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   height=\"429\" width=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/SEI_312403233.jpg\" alt=\"Matty Wildie walks onto the pitch during the BETFRED Championship match between Oldham and Doncaster RLFC at Boundary Park, Oldham, on May 8, 2026. (Photo by MI News\/NurPhoto via Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-4767699\"\/>The Roughyeds play their home games at Boundary Park (Photo: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>In a video posted online, Quinn alleged that the cancellation was down to safety concerns and a lack of paperwork provided by Pro-Excel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t enough for the insurance brokers to send to the underwriters\u2026 [and] wasn\u2019t deemed as acceptable from an insurance point of view,\u201d Quinn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not going to hold an event where people are unsafe or we feel that they\u2019re unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The online video containing the allegations has since been taken down. At the time Pro-Excel denied the allegations and any suggestion of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>The i Paper understands the dance company, which has worked in the United States at NFL and NBA games, as well as in the UK at Formula One and Rugby World Cup events, initiated legal action in April this year.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed Pro-Excel is seeking \u00a3200,000 in damages from Oldham and Quinn, who stepped down as chairman and owner of the club in April after claiming ill health.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 5,000 tickets were sold for the event, with thousands of customers left out of pocket and still chasing to get their money back.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, children across the country were also left devastated by the collapse of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPro-Excel Limited can confirm that High Court proceedings have been issued against Oldham Rugby League Football Club 1876 Limited and a second defendant,\u201d Pro-Excel said in a statement last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proceedings relate to matters arising from the cancellation of Pro-Excel\u2019s planned event at Boundary Park in May 2025 and associated statements subsequently made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs proceedings are now live, it would not be appropriate for us to comment further. We will allow the legal process to take its course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quinn took over as chairman of Oldham in May 2023, but endured a turbulent period in charge until his exit five months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Director of rugby and fellow co-owner <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/sport\/sam-burgess-mike-ford-england-rugby-world-cup-2015-bath-433836?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Ford<\/a> quit in January and Quinn was handed a year-long ban from Boundary Park, due to allegations made against him by <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/sport\/football\/oldham-perfect-antidote-champions-league-final-3726191?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oldham Athletic<\/a>\u2018s board.<\/p>\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The Roughyeds were forced to leave the League Two club\u2019s stadium this year during this dispute, but have since returned after Quinn sold to a new ownership group in June.<\/p>\n<p>Oldham also faced a winding-up petition from <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/hmrc?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HMRC<\/a> over a historic debt, but the petition was dismissed by the High Court in February.<\/p>\n<p>Oldham RFLC, Quinn and Quinn\u2019s legal representatives have not responded to requests for comment.
