\n\tOn Tuesday afternoon, Danny Boyle<\/a>\u2019s \u201cInk,\u201d about the rise of U.K. tabloid The Sun under owner Rupert Murdoch<\/a> (a cheeky Guy Pearce<\/a>) and editor Larry Lamb (Jack O\u2019Connell, swaggering), made its Canadian debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. As our critic wrote<\/a>, it\u2019s \u201ca propulsive, can\u2019t-look-away account\u201d of the rise of the U.K.\u2019s most popular tabloid and the smuttification of news, with the rag opting for outrageous headlines, giveaway contests and topless women over hard-hitting journalism. And yes, it\u2019s indeed an electrifying film that should garner praise for not only Boyle but Pearce and Variety <\/a>cover star O\u2019Connell<\/a>, who delivers his most magnetic performance since \u201cStarred Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the film\u2019s post-screening Q&A at the Princess of Wales Theatre, Boyle and the cast fielded questions from the audience about a few topics, including the movie\u2019s use of AI. Boyle previously copped to using \u201cabout 30 seconds\u201d of AI at the Telluride Film Festival \u201cwhere we animate a couple of old photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOh, and there\u2019s some mice,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s very good for animals and we had some mice that run around The Sun newsroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen an audience member in the balcony of the theater asked Boyle about his use of AI in the film and the threat AI poses more broadly to the film industry and the world, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind TIFF<\/a>-premiering \u201cSlumdog Millionaire\u201d said, \u201cWe used a tiny amount of it. It\u2019s very much linked with VFX in our world; it\u2019s one of the tools they use in the VFX. We try to be very responsible and make sure no actors were out of work because of it, so we would always employ actors if we were going to use a bit of it. There was about 30 seconds of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for the broader implications of AI, he tabled that for another day.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe wider question of it and its place in our society of course, including our profession, is a huge and complicated one which I don\u2019t think we can probably go into here, but we will need to go into it, all of us.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWith that, the moderator ended the Q&A.<\/p>\n

\n\tBoyle was joined onstage by O\u2019Connell and Pearce who, earlier in the chat, dished on how they painted humanizing portraits of two larger-than-life figures who\u2019ve wreaked quite a bit of chaos on the world. Boyle said he identified with the Yorkshire-raised Lamb because, as a native of Lancashire, he was also \u201can outsider coming to London.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPearce, meanwhile, said that when he began researching Murdoch, he didn\u2019t necessarily see the \u201cmonster\u201d with the \u201cmystique\u201d that so many people paint him as, but someone timid and callow.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt started, really, with looking at some footage of Murdoch from the mid-\u201860s onward,\u201d Pearce explained of his fellow Aussie. \u201cWhen I looked at footage of him and interviews of him where they would catch him at Sydney Airport or Melbourne Airport\u2026 he always looked awkward, he always looked shy, he always looked very humble\u2026 and not the image we all have of this person we think we now know given what we\u2019ve seen in the last 20, 30 or 40 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
