A date has been set for the opening of a new outdoor gym at a Kent beach, providing the community with a free fitness facility year-round.

After much anticipation, Walmer Beach Gym will welcome health enthusiasts of all ability levels from 2pm on Thursday, September 17 2026.

In recent weeks, works have been underway to prepare the site, found off The Strand in Walmer, near Deal, for its new purpose as an outdoor fitness centre.

Neighbouring the Roman Landings Adventure Golf, it will feature a range of cardio, cross fitness and weight training equipment.

No membership fees are required and the apparatus will be freely available for members of the community aged 13 and over, 24-hours a day, every day of the year.

A public survey conducted by Walmer Town Council (WTC) in March and April 2024 found that 88 per cent of responders thought the council should install an outdoor gym, and that 87 per cent would use the free facility.

Equipment for the gym has been ordered and installed by supplier KOMPAN, with the finishing touches on the facility being made this week. Funding was made possible thanks to WTC being awarded a £15,000 grant from Sport England’s Sport England’s Movement Fund.

After planning permission for the project was put forward to Dover District Council (DDC) in December 2025, the application was withdrawn as it was determined that the build could go ahead using a lawful development certificate, which does not require planning permission.

The gym will feature different zones dedicated to resistance strength training, cardio workouts, full-body free weight training, calisthenics workouts and flexibility and mobility exercises.

The opening ceremony on Thursday, September 17 will include a few thank you speeches dedicated to those who have supported the project before members of the public will have an opportunity to try the facility for themselves. During the induction week, there will be free training sessions for the community to familiarise themselves with the facility and its equipment.

A full programme for the induction week is to be shared soon. WTC has urged any qualified personal trainers who would like to help organise the induction week to get in touch by contacting admin@walmercouncil.co.uk

[46
3860,254846,6647,11823,102,56,54,55
post-772409","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-deal","tag-dover-district-council","tag-fitness","tag-good-news","tag-health","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
