\n\tA free and unburdened Stephen Colbert<\/a> was back on late night on Tuesday, but this time he was (sort of) answering the questions rather than asking them. <\/p>\n

\n\tColbert appeared on Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> Live! and took part in a lengthy interview that took in the Emmys, his beard, smooching Jimmy Kimmel, smooching his wife, his upcoming Lord of the Rings movie and an update on what happened to all his Late Show suits.<\/p>\n

\n\tKimmel began the interview by asking his longtime friend and former late night peer if he missed the grind, to which Colbert shot back: \u201cNope! I will say, I have an opportunity to not think about the news every day, and I took it.\u201d They then talked about the seven wins The Late Show With Stephen Colbert scored <\/a>at the 2026 Emmys for the show\u2019s final season. Discussing the Emmys, the pair joked about sharing a \u201cbeard-on-beard\u201d smooch that wasn\u2019t caught by the TV cameras and the \u201cendangered\u201d status of late night hosts, particularly after Colbert\u2019s cancellation and the continual speculation around the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tThey recounted how at the Emmys ceremony a photographer gathered the snowy-bearded quartet of Colbert, Kimmel, Jon Stewart and John Oliver together for a photo and then joked that they were the \u201cendangered table\u201d before he snapped the picture. <\/p>\n

After replaying Colbert\u2019s Emmy acceptance speech, Kimmel playfully lambasted his friend for giving a sweet paean to his wife, Evie, which made all the other late night hosts look bad with their own wives. Colbert revealed that it wasn\u2019t all a bed of roses at home and that Evie \u201chates\u201d his beard. \u201cShe warned me, \u2018If you grow a beard, the kiss count\u2019s going to go way down.\u2019\u201d He lamented that \u201csmoochy time\u201d has been much shorter. Also, he said he had promised his wife that if he won an Emmy, he would shave off the beard.<\/p>\n

\n\tKimmel saw his opening and asked if Colbert would shave his beard on the show, to which he replied: \u201cAll right, that\u2019s fairly scandalous, but all right. From the neck up, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKimmel then asked about CBS and whether anyone from the network congratulated their erstwhile star Colbert for the Emmy wins. \u201cI am not familiar with that organization. Thank you for asking!\u201d Colbert joked, avoiding the question entirely. Colbert did reveal that CBS allowed him to keep his suits from The Late Show and that he now has 40 suits in storage. \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do with them. If anyone just got out of law school and needs a suit, please call Jimmy, he\u2019ll get the message to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert then talked about the \u201cbeautiful tan suit\u201d he wore when the daughter of both hosts\u2019 manager, James \u201cBaby Doll\u201d Dixon, got married and how Kimmel spilled red wine all over it. Colbert said he was worried he wouldn\u2019t be able to get the stains out to wear the suit to the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago in June, as he had hoped to get a laugh from the former president for referencing the ridiculous tan suit controversy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert said that after the Obama Center opening, he had lunch with Steven Spielberg, and the legendary director tried to pry information out of him about his upcoming Lord of the Rings film.<\/a> \u201cSpielberg says to me, \u2018All right, tell me everything about the Lord of the Rings film. Tell me everything.\u2019\u201d And you sign all kinds of NDAs before you\u2019re allowed anywhere near one of these sets, and he knows that, right? And you know, there are lawyers, and I\u2019m new to all of this, so I was super nervous,\u201d said Colbert.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I just said, \u2018OK, so here\u2019s what happens: Frodo teams up with a time-traveling dinosaur!\u2019 And he goes, \u2018You can tell me, I\u2019m Steven Spielberg, I know Peter Jackson.\u2019 And I was terrified! I was afraid I would get in trouble, so I didn\u2019t tell him anything. And then later I told our writing partner Philippa Boyens, and she goes, \u2018You idiot! He might have had a good idea, he\u2019s Steven Spielberg!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert then joked, \u201cListen, Steven, if you\u2019re watching, I\u2019m ready to take your call!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReflecting on his time in New Zealand making the movie, Colbert didn\u2019t, however, give any major updates on the film<\/a>, but he did reveal that his son Peter McGee, who is co-writing the tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, knows much more Rings lore than he does, which came as something of a shock to him.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter finally shaving his beard off, Colbert concluded the interview by gifting Kimmel something special from his show. Colbert recounted that back when he was doing The Colbert Report, the people at Marvel gave him a replica of Captain America\u2019s shield for being a \u201cpatriot.\u201d He said the shield had been featured on The Colbert Report and later on The Late Show, but he was now giving Kimmel the shield. A clearly touched Kimmel said he would permanently mount the shield on the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/p>\n
