The central bank\u2019s Federal Open Market Committee had been holding the federal funds rate steady since the start of the year but decided at its Sept. 16 meeting to increase it by a quarter percentage point, to a target range of 3.75 to 4\ufeff percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">The federal funds rate is the interest rate that financial institutions charge each other when they lend reserves overnight, which affects other interest rates. By raising the cost of borrowing, the Fed aims to slow consumer demand for goods and services, which can drive down prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">A rate hike is one tool that the Fed can use to fight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/personal-finance\/what-to-know-about-inflation\/\" data-overlay-msg=\"AARP.Everywhere.LeavingModal.drawOverlay(this,&#039;&#039;,\/content\/dam\/content-fragments\/aarp-org\/en\/article\/money\/personal-finance\/2026\/what-fed-interest-rate-hike-means.html,&#039;&#039;,&#039;You are now leaving AARP.org and going to a website that is not operated by AARP. Inflation data released Sept. 11 showed that consumer prices were up 3.\ufeff4 percent year over year in August. \ufeff<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">\u201cAt a glance, rate hikes don\u2019t sound great for consumers,\u201d says Ted Rossman, principal consumer finance analyst at Money Management International, a nonprofit credit counseling agency. \u201cBorrowing is already expensive enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">But higher interest rates aren\u2019t necessarily bad news all around. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">\u201cLike everything, there will be winners and losers,\u201d says Laura Quinby, associate director of labor markets and household finance at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. \u201cIt really depends on how a household is invested and what sources of income they have in retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">Here\u2019s what to know about how the Fed\u2019s rate hike will affect retirees.<\/p>\n<p>            What it means for savers<\/p>\n<p class=\"uxdia-article-body__paragraph\">\u201cOne silver lining is that higher rates are going to benefit savers,\u201d Rossman says.
