That procedural suspension cancelled all pending legislation, and the measure has not been revived.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian government currently relies on privacy law and a voluntary industry code instead.<\/p>\n<p>On defence, discussions centred on reconciling competing British and Canadian blueprints for an allied military financing bank, against the backdrop of Canada applying to the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force and joining the Global Combat Air Programme as an observer.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that Canada become the EU\u2019s first \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/9\/16\/eu-chief-von-der-leyen-proposes-associate-member-status-for-canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">associate member<\/a>\u201d, as Ottawa seeks closer ties with Europe amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/9\/14\/carney-pitches-canada-to-global-investors-amid-us-trade-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade tensions<\/a> with the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"UK and Canada explore AI risks, defence cooperation, and joint initiatives during a bilateral meeting in Liverpool.
