{"id":773359,"date":"2026-09-17T06:54:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T06:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/773359\/"},"modified":"2026-09-17T06:54:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T06:54:10","slug":"summer-goes-out-with-a-heat-dome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/773359\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Goes Out With a Heat Dome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the calendar indicated that astronomical summer was winding down, a swath of the south-central United States was sweltering under a heat dome in mid-September 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This map shows air temperatures in the contiguous U.S. on September 15, 2026, at 4 p.m. Central Time (21:00 Universal Time), modeled at 2 meters (6.5 feet) above the ground. It was produced by combining satellite observations with temperatures predicted by a version of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov\/geos-systems\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GEOS<\/a>\u00a0(Goddard Earth Observing System) model, which uses mathematical equations to represent physical processes in the atmosphere. The darkest reds indicate areas where temperatures approached or exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than <a href=\"https:\/\/heat.gov\/#:~:text=See%20the%20current%20number%20of%20people%20in%20the%20U.S.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">41 million people<\/a> in the U.S.\u2014about 12 percent of the population\u2014were under a National Weather Service extreme heat advisory, extreme heat watch, or extreme heat warning on September 15. The high temperatures <a href=\"https:\/\/mesonet.agron.iastate.edu\/timemachine\/?product=59&amp;timestamp=202609151900\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spanned<\/a> large portions of several states, such as Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. Meteorologists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-forecasts\/latest-heat-dome-to-linger-in-south-central-southeastern-us-in-mid-september\/1933322\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> that high humidity, limited cloud cover, and light winds could make temperatures feel higher than thermometer readings and increase the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/safety\/heat-illness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat-related illnesses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several locations set new daily high temperature records on September 15. These included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/fwd\/dfw_records_normals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas, Texas<\/a>, at 101\u00baF (38\u00baC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnews5.com\/2026\/09\/15\/first-alert-record-heat-today-more-records-could-fall-before-week-is-over\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Memphis, Tennessee<\/a>, at 99\u00baF (37\u00baC), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/Climate?wfo=ohx&amp;tab=cliplot&amp;sid=BNAthr&amp;view=monthly&amp;month=2026-09\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nashville, Tennessee<\/a>, at 100\u00baF (38\u00baC). The cities were all at least 12\u00baF warmer than normal that day, with Nashville breaking its daily-high record from 1927. The day before, Nashville also set a record-high minimum temperature of 75\u00baF (24\u00baC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A weather phenomenon meteorologists call a <a href=\"https:\/\/glossary.ametsoc.org\/wiki\/heat-dome\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat dome<\/a> was responsible for driving temperatures up across the region. A heat dome develops when an area of high pressure in the upper atmosphere pushes hot air <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wcKZEtqy5M8?si=H4Ir4zTjAKa3AWau\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">toward the surface<\/a> and traps it there. Heat domes put the brakes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/learn-about\/weather\/how-weather-works\/what-is-convection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convection<\/a> and suppress clouds and precipitation. This allows sunlight to reach Earth\u2019s surface relatively unhindered and further elevate air temperatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stretch of unseasonable temperatures follows the warmest June through August in the contiguous United States in a 132-year record, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/national-climate-202608\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to NOAA<\/a>.
