(Supplied: Jenny Davis)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A camera been installed at a pool on a temporary stream on the Watarrka escarpment near Kings Canyon, about 350 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QnrUItgTCmk\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">live streaming project<\/a> is a collaboration between Charles Darwin University&#8217;s Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods and NT Parks and Wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing the bush online<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Freshwater ecology professor Jenny Davis has studied Central Australian waterholes on and off since 1986 and has used motion-sensitive cameras at sites in Watarrka for about a decade.<\/p>\n<p>But now it is possible to see what is happening there continuously.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A smiling, middle-aged woman with blonde hair.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/8b4b3af2e07fcb65abbbaf30c7e328de.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jenny Davis says anyone who walks to the site could make a cameo on the stream. (Supplied: Jenny Davis)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With no mains power or internet connection available, the system relies on solar energy, a Starlink Mini and an onsite computer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Davis said the installation took about a week, during which the team repeatedly hiked 2 kilometres from the Kings Canyon car park to the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We had to put everything there at the waterhole,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We were going up and down that 2 kilometres every day and I can tell you by the end of that week I was starting to feel it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dingoes, wallabies and life after dark<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The result is a window into a part of Watarrka that relatively few people will ever spend significant time observing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dingoes have already emerged as some of the live stream&#8217;s regular stars.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Davis said dingoes with golden, black, and white-and-tan coats had been recorded.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A night-vision image of a wallaby-like animal sitting on some rocks.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1e69cc5599dec7ca9d6250e862e86fa6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A euro is captured by the camera at the waterhole after dark. (YouTube: Watarrka Waterhole Wildlife)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Sometimes it&#8217;s a lone dingo, sometimes they&#8217;re in a mob,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re coming in to drink, but they&#8217;re also quite curious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Euros, also known as hill wallabies, frequent the area, while birds, insects and the occasional feral cat have also appeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At night, viewers may spot frogs by the reflection from their eyes or hear their calls following rain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Davis said viewers could also hear rain falling, frogs calling and birds, including the grey shrike-thrush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot to take in,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Watching a changing climate<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For researchers, what appears on the screen is more than a wildlife spectacle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The camera overlooks a temporary stream that can shrink or dry completely, making changes in rainfall and water availability particularly important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Davis said the site had held water more consistently during several wetter years in Central Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As a freshwater ecologist, I&#8217;m really keen to see when there&#8217;s water present, when it&#8217;s raining, because this is a very arid environment,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re looking for what&#8217;s happening with global warming because, at this site, the only real impact on the amount of water present is going to be climate change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sandy-coloured dingo wanders along the rocky edge off an outback waterhole.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/372177eefe70adeb9c59efb56c636ff1.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dingoes have been a fixture of the live stream. (Supplied: Jenny Davis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NT Parks and Wildlife senior district ranger Di Bowman said Watarrka was home to distinctive landscapes and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This live stream allows people to experience some of our wildlife and gain an appreciation of life in the outback, all from the comfort of home,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Watarrka National Park holds deep cultural significance for the Matutjara people and is internationally known for the sandstone walls and gorges surrounding Kings Canyon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The waterhole itself is along the Giles Track, away from the park&#8217;s busiest visitor areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In the red heart of Central Australia, a dingo wanders to the edge of a waterhole.
