<\/p>\nFive years after her agency ASK\u2019s collapse, former agent Andr\u00e9a (Camille Cottin) is directing her first film when her leading man quits and she fires her producer. Desperate to save the production, she recruits former assistant No\u00e9mie (Laure Calamy) and attempts to recast the film and avert disaster.<\/p>\n
Making a movie about a TV show about the monstrous egos behind movies and television\u00a0risks\u00a0disappearing up your own satirical\u00a0arse. Add a litany of cameos, including George Clooney as George Clooney and Eva Longoria as, you guessed it, Eva Longoria, and\u00a0Call My Agent! The Movie\u00a0sounds like\u00a0a\u00a0true over-indulgent\u00a0meta nightmare. But this long-awaited sequel to the beloved TV\u00a0series\u00a0remains, against the odds,\u00a0rather delightful.<\/p>\n

Directing her debut feature, Andr\u00e9a (Camille Cottin) discovers that managing a production is harder when you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0simply make demands at increasing volume down the phone until everyone falls in line. With her\u00a0leading man\u00a0gone and the shoot in peril, she drafts\u00a0in\u00a0her former assistant turned reality-TV producer No\u00e9mie (Laure Calamy), while genial agent Gabriel (Gr\u00e9gory Montel) and the rest of ASK are also gradually dragged into the chaos.<\/p>\n
Director \u00c9milie Noblet, working from a screenplay co-written by series creator Fanny Herrero, has fun reversing the old power dynamic. Andr\u00e9a,\u00a0once charged with\u00a0placating\u00a0impossible\u00a0filmmaker egos, has become one herself. Her increasingly desperate attempts to keep her film alive supply pleasing karmic retribution, while old resentments ensure the ASK reunion is hardly a warm group hug. The feature format inevitably loses some of the series\u2019 nimble episodic rhythm, particularly as the crises pile up, but its refusal to treat any of this showbiz nonsense as terribly important keeps the self-indulgence\u00a0largely at\u00a0bay.<\/p>\n
Cottin\u00a0remains\u00a0magnificent,\u00a0with\u00a0her\u00a0Andr\u00e9a capable of turning even a plea for help into an implied threat. Motherhood may have\u00a0somewhat softened\u00a0her, but\u00a0she\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0been\u00a0defanged. Watching this\u00a0fierce\u00a0consummate control freak discover that directing\u00a0actually\u00a0requires\u00a0some\u00a0diplomacy gives the film its sharpest comic edge.\u00a0While the\u00a0cameos occasionally threaten to tip\u00a0it into\u00a0Hollywood navel-gazing, they\u00a0are thankfully fleeting\u00a0enough to just remain fun asides.\u00a0Call My Agent! The Movie\u00a0is\u00a0naturally\u00a0more indulgent at feature length, but its barbs\u00a0remain\u00a0sharp\u00a0enough to\u00a0skewer any\u00a0pomposity.<\/p>\n
A potentially insufferable showbiz victory lap instead proves a witty, affectionate reunion for our favourite French talent agents.
