If there\u2019s one thing Noel Gallagher<\/a> absolutely loves, it\u2019s being taken by surprise. It is certainly a trait that helps when you\u2019ve spent most of your life in the proximity of Liam. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a feature that defines Oasis, being able to do the exact opposite of what anyone is expecting at any given time. Even if it\u2019s as simple as holding an air of unpredictability on stage, or people constantly guessing whether they were going to keep sweet enough to last an entire tour run.<\/p>\n

This is also a constant thing in conversations today. Are they faking their peace so they can endure sharing a stage together one last time? All of this isn\u2019t exactly anything new. But it does give them an everlasting edge that keeps people enticed, because you just don\u2019t know what they\u2019re about to do at any given moment.<\/p>\n

This stretches into their musical tastes, too. In fact, whenever one of them discusses another musician, it\u2019s sometimes hard to tell whether they\u2019re praising them or taking the piss, like their passion could be seen as genuine appreciation or some kind of complicated aggression regarding anybody else who got it right.<\/p>\n

Although, when it comes to Noel, there is one person who seems to be immune to such ambiguities: David Bowie. <\/p>\n

As he explained in 2012, \u201cI always thought he was great, but I never really thought he was\u00a0as\u00a0great as I think he is now. I think he is up there with John Lennon and fucking Bob Dylan and those guys<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Praising his eclecticism in Culture Map<\/a>, he continued, \u201cHis recorded output is fucking phenomenal. But every single style of music that he attempted, whether it be pop in the \u201960s and this glam rock thing in the \u201970s and the avant-garde electronic music in the late \u201970s and then, like, electro-pop in the \u201980s. All fucking truly amazing. And it\u2019s beginning to blow me away, so I\u2019ve been listening to it lots recently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking at someone like Noel, it\u2019d be easy to guess his favourites. He\u2019s probably like all of us and respects the classics while secretly knowing the Berlin trilogy was him at his best, him at his most creatively free. But what he also loves is how much Bowie could quite literally spawn out of nowhere and take you by surprise all over again. This was the case in 2013 with Bowie\u2019s The Next Day \u2013 his first release in ten years at the time.<\/p>\n

But what\u2019s especially funny about this was that Noel wasn\u2019t just taken by surprise musically. It literally came out of nowhere, to him at least, and was only brought to his attention by his wife, who charged in one day going on about a new song. \u201cI came downstairs and my missus, Sara, said, \u2018David Bowie\u2019s got a new single out,\u2019\u201d he recalled. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Are you sure it wasn\u2019t \u2018Heroes\u2019?\u2019 She shoots back: \u2018I know what fucking \u2018Heroes\u2019 sounds like and it isn\u2019t that!\u201d he continued. \u201cNothing will match the jaw-dropping moment of going online and playing \u2018The Stars (Are Out Tonight)\u2019 for the first time. I\u2019m lying on my bed listening to it, get to the end and think, \u2018Hang on, it can\u2019t be that good, I\u2019ve got to listen to it again!\u2019 I must have played the album 20 days in a row when it came out. I obsessed over it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadly, he also lamented that Bowie was the last of his kind, adding, \u201cThere won\u2019t be another David Bowie, that\u2019s for sure. Because the industry doesn\u2019t want that. They don\u2019t want a guy like David Bowie completely murdering Ziggy Stardust to go off and become another character.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
